Myanmar: Confirmed cases of cholera, hundreds hospitalized

August 17, 2026 at 3:57 PM Updated on August 17, 2026 at 3:43 PM By AFP © 2026 AFP

A total of 500 people have been hospitalized in Yangon for severe diarrhea, of whom nearly 150 have tested positive for cholera, a regional official announced Monday.

Since August 9, 500 people have been hospitalized with diarrhea, the main symptom of cholera, said the region's social affairs minister, Bo Htay.

Rapid cholera tests came back positive in 149 cases, the official told parliament in the Yangon region, which includes Myanmar's largest city.

These statements constitute the first official confirmation of the presence of cholera, more than a week after the first hospitalizations.

Nine of these cases have been confirmed as cases of "vibrio cholerae" by the National Health Laboratory.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection, is caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with a vibrio bacterium. While easily treated, primarily through rehydration or antibiotics in severe cases, it can be fatal within hours if left untreated.

More than 100 new patients were admitted to hospital Thursday evening, but the number of new cases has since decreased, the minister said.

A 92-year-old patient died after being admitted to the hospital for diarrhea. However, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Sunday, citing officials, that the patient had succumbed to pre-existing heart and lung conditions.

Health personnel were implementing "epidemiological surveillance and epidemic control measures in the affected areas," the newspaper reported, citing officials.

The World Health Organization describes cholera as "a threat to global public health", and also as an indicator of "inequity and a lack of economic and social development".

Infrastructure and the health system in Myanmar are severely damaged after more than five years of civil war that have claimed over 100,000 lives.
