The exposed-group consists of ten children (six males and four females) ranging in age from 06 to 14 years. The control-group consists of eight healthy brazilian children (four males and four females) not exposed to Cs{sup 137}, ranging in age form 04 to 16 years. The hprt-cloning assay was the chosen method for this study. Hprt mutant frequency was determined for both groups of children. The mean mutant frequency for the control group was 3.85 x 10-{sup 6}, and for the exposed group a mean of 18.05 x 10-{sup 6}. The mean mutant frequency detected for the control group does not differ meaningfully from the few data available about mutant frequency in children. However, for the exposed group the mean value was five-fold higher. In some cases the mutant frequency in the exposed group seems higher than might have been expected from the estimated exposure. In these cases the T-cell receptor gene rearrangement assay must be performed in order to clarify, or to correct the observed mutant frequency.</td></tr></tbody></table>
