Child deaths due to pneumonia, meningitis, malaria, dengue see spurt in Mumbai

Pneumonia, meningitis, malaria, dengue and diarrhoea were the prime reasons behind the 17% spurt in the death of children in the 1-5 age group this year.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data shows between April 2013 and March 2014, 949 children did not live to see their fifth birthday. The corresponding period last year saw the deaths of 810 children.
CMR (child mortality rate) refers to the number of deaths against 1,000 births of children aged between 0 and 5. Infant mortality also refers to the same ratio, but with regard to children below one year of age.
In the latter category, the city saw a silver lining. Infant mortality for the year dropped 11% this year ? from 5,161 to 4,505.

16 children die every day in Mumbai: State Health minister

Mumbai: The figure is chilling. Sixteen children die every day in Mumbai. Health minister Dr Deepak Sawant admitted this in the recently concluded monsoon session of the Assembly. While Sawant did not specify the areas where the deaths occurred, health experts say it could be mainly urban slums.

The minister attributed the main reasons for these deaths to communicable diseases, diarrhoea and respiratory problems. However, health sector professionals were not willing to buy the explanation.
Malnutrition is the main reason, as it first leads to low immunity, and later into some disease, they argue.
?It is absolutely wrong to say there is no malnutrition in Mumbai,? said Neeraj Hatekar, director and professor of econometrics, department of economics, University of Mumbai, co-author of a study: ?Quietly they Die: A Study of Malnourishment Related Deaths in Mumbai City? in 2003.
