MUMBAI: The sudden rise in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting in the past few days has prompted the civic administration to collect water samples from the Bandra (E) locality . Private doctors, however, believe it is cholera that has hit the patients.

Four people from the Behrampada slum sprawl are undergoing treatment for cholera at Kasturba Hospital, the civic infectious diseases specialty hospital. While BMC officials maintain the patients have gastroenteritis , their family doctors said that the hanging drop test confirmed the presence of cholera bacteria.

BMC additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar confirmed that water samples had been collected from various sites following cases of suspected cholera. "However, we still do not have confirmation as yet," she said.

Two out of seven patients test positive for cholera

Two of the seven patients suspected to be suffering from cholera have tested positive for the disease. The results of the culture tests of the seven patients admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Chinchpokli, were released on Friday. The culture test is done to confirm cholera. ?The two children whose
samples tests are positive for cholera suffer from gastroenteritis cases and have mild cholera,? said Shah.

The city has also witnessed a rise in diarrhoea and gastroenteritis cases in certain pockets in the last few days. ?We have been getting at least six to eight cases of diarrhoea and gastroenteritis since the last few days. The condition is better than 15 days back when 15 to 20 patients were being admitted everyday,? said a doctor from Bhabha Hospital.

?We have referred eight paediatric cases of acute gastroenteritis to Kasturba so far,? said Dr Ajit Kale, senior medical officer, Bhabha Hospital.

To stem the rising cases, the BMC has so far conducted 10 medical camps in areas such as Behrampada, Bharatnagar, Kherwadi and Government Colony in Bandra.

?We have identified people with mild symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting in these areas,? said Shah. The results of fifty water samples taken from these areas and sent for testing to municipal analysts are still awaited.

Ten to 15 sporadic cases of cholera are identified every year, which is normal, said Shah.

Medics feel yellow water linked to diseases

MUMBAI: Medical practitioners in the western suburbs, receiving a steady stream of diarrhoea patients everyday, are now questioning the presence of the yellow colour in the BMC's water supply.

Doctors say there could be a co-relation between the yellow water in the western suburbs and patients complaining of abdominal pains, vomiting, nausea, cramps and even ulcers in the mouth. Doctors say such symptoms mainly occur in summer and monsoon. "Many patients complain of cramps in the abdomen or nausea or acidity. In the last 10 days, I have treated at least 10 patients with diarrhoea and one patient with hepatitis, mouth ulcers, fever, joint pains, cramps. This isn't the season for such problems. We believe it is due to yellow water," said Dr Monica Matani, a homeopath practising at Four Bungalows in Andheri (W).
