Man dies of cancer, wife kills self in building with cell tower

MUMBAI: A day after it came to light that four residents of one Vile Parle building located close to a cell tower had cancer, TOI has learnt of a double-tragedy in Dombivli. The building in Umesh Nagar society has a cell tower atop its terrace.
A couple who lived on the third floor of the building died within six months of each other. The wife committed suicide on December 28 last year and her husband succumbed to brain tumour (glioblastoma) last month, on June 27.
Since the tower's installation three years ago, Ravikant Sawant (54) and his wife Rajita (44) had complained of headaches, memory loss, sleep disorder and incoherent speech delivery, alleged Ravikant's brother Sadanand.
"Once there was pooja at home and he was unable to fo-l-low the pandit's instruct-i-o-ns." Ravikant was referred to Na-ir Hospital and diagno-sed with stage 4 glioblastoma.
Rajita had set herself ablaze in the kitchen. She, too, constantly complained of headache and irritability. "This may sound strange but we did co-relate her symptoms to exposure to the cell tower," said Sadanand.
Elsewhere, in Dahisar (West), Karmel Nair of Nilesh Cooperative Housing said she had been facing an uphill task to get a cell tower uninstalled from an SRA building in her neighbourhood. Nair and her neighbours complain of sleep disturbance, headaches, memory and concentration issues, and low immunity....
