Muhammadiyah Launches Tanggap Flu Burung Movement in 9 Provinces

Jakarta, August 25, 2008 - Ministry of Health - Muhammadiyah initiates Tanggap Flu Burung Movement in 9 provinces. Acting on behalf of the Minister of Health in launching the program is Dr. I Nyoman Kandun, MPH , Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2PL) MOH .

This movement involves all links associate to Muhammadiyah, Aisyiyah, and other Muhammadiyah affiliates organization i.e. Muhammadiyah Students Group, Muhammadiyah Youth Group, from the central level thru all the organization's branches. This event is supported Ministry of Health and the National Bird Flu Committee.

Mr Kandun explains further that bird flu handling, same as other communicable disease handling such as lung tubercolosis, Malarian, HIV/AIDS and dengue fever can be done by the governemnt alone. All levels in community has to be actively involved, in where Muhammadiyah as a huge community organization with members thoroughout the country has been actively involved in the nation's development and also they has shown their role in this country's health development.

It is expected that the Tanggap Flu Burung movement in the Muhammadiyah area can give a huge contribution in handling bird flu in Indonesia.

With the theme Clean Environment, Healthy Community, Bird Flu Free, activities such as healthy walk, disinfect action, painting competition, cooking poultry competition, and wash your hands action were conducted in the ceremony.

Wash your hand with soap and running water is the easiest and most effective way, and it is also very important in preventing the spread of communicable diseases such as bird flu, diarrhea, typhoid and hepatitis.

Though there are soaps in almost every household, people infrequently use it to wash their hands. Washing your hands with soap and running water will kill the virus that sticks in our hands, fingers and nail. Therefore, hand washing is a very important action to prevent people from catching communicable diseases.

In 2006, Muhammadiyah had formed the Muhammadiyah Bird Flu Handling Team (TPFB Muhammadiyah). Its' tasks is to conduct campaigns to raise public awareness about the danger of bird flu.

In 2 years time, TPFB Muhammadiyad has suceeded in forming 7,000 links of Muhammadiyah bird flu task force in 9 provinces in Indonesia, that is North Sumatra (Deliserdang), Lampung (South Lampung), Banten (Lebak), DKI Jakarta (Central Jakarta), West Java (Kuningan), Central Java (Kebumen), DI Yogyakarta (Jogja town), East Java (Surabaya), and Bali (Denpasar).

Muhammadiyah has at least 30.000.000 followers, 500 hospitals and clinics, 170.000 schools, this includes kindergarten up to universities, and also 350 orphanages. These are the links that are being used by Muhammadiyah for the Tanggap Flu Burung campaign.

Up to now, exposure to sick birds remains the primary source of human infection with Bird Flu. To prevent bird flu, people need to keep alert and be vigilant, especially if there are sick or sudden deaths of poultry in the area. People are urged to learn more about bird flu and to reduce their risk of contracting the virus by adopting clean and healthy behaviors:

Don't touch sick or dead chickens. If you have had contact with sick or dead chickens, promptly wash your hands with soap and report the incident to your village head.

Wash your hands and cooking appliances with soap before cooking. Cook chicken and eggs well.

Separate poultry from humans. And also separate new poultry from existing poultry flocks for 2 weeks.

Go to a Public Health Center or Hospital immediately if you have flu and fever symptoms after having contact with poultry/chicken. Do not wait more than two days, especially if there are many poultry around your house or you had contact with poultry.

Wear gloves and cover your nose and mouth when handling poultry
Do not eat poultry that are sick or have died.

Cull, burn and bury sick or dead poultry.

Do not let children play with poultry.

...RED spaghetti, a chicken roll and hot chili fried eggs replaced the usual banners, posters and stickers in a bird flu campaign late last month.
The campaigner, one of the country's biggest Muslim organizations Muhammadiyah, said it knew better approaches were needed to ensure its campaigns could engage locals. "Specific activities would make them feel they're really involved in the campaigns against bird flu," event organizer Ahmad Imam M. Rais said.
In the past two and half years, Muhammadiyah has seen 12,000 members in 12,000 villages carry out bird flu campaigns across the country, Ahmad said.
Campaigners work to remove poultry from residential areas, train local residents to properly handle infected chickens by covering up and burying diseased fowl instead of dumping it in rivers, and promote regular use of disinfectants to kill the H5N1 virus.
Under the Muhammadiyah Team to Tackle Avian Influenza, the organization has also established a network of 7,000 "Avian Influenza Force" volunteer groups in nine provinces: Jakarta, North Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java and Bali.
"Our approach is to make people believe there is nothing to be afraid of with bird flu, because it is preventable," Ahmad said.
However, he said, it was not easy to teach villagers about the epidemic, especially when it comes to changing their deep-rooted knowledge and behavior. "In many cases, villagers were confused about the difference between symptoms of bird flu and those of Newcastle disease (ND). So, when they found their H5N1-infected chickens died, they thought it was simply because of ND, resulting in improper burying and the spread of the virus," Ahmad said.
The government has said it cannot control the avian influenza epidemic on its own due to limited resources. "As the government can't walk alone in fighting bird flu, community groups can definitely act to bring bird flu campaigns closer to the public as they have members across the country," Health Ministry Director General for Disease Control and Environmental Sanitation, I Nyoman Kandun, said during the campaign.
He said Muhammadiyah, with some 30 millions members, could help the government prevent and control bird flu outbreaks across the country. "With 500 hospitals and health clinics, as well as 17,000 educational institutions across the country, Muhammadiyah can back the government's effort to fight the epidemic in remote areas," Kandun said.
Besides Muhammadiyah, professional and religious groups like the Indonesian Veterinarian Association and Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama have also been working with the government in fighting bird flu for the past few years, Kandun said.

THE number of poultry, mostly chickens, that died of bird flu in Purbalingga regency in the first half of 2008 has surpassed the 2007 total, the head of the local development planning agency said last month.
"Some 58,000 poultry died of bird flu in 2007, while more than 60,000 died during the first six month of this year," Heni Ruslanto said. "The poultry were confirmed to have died of bird flu."
Heni added people in the region had limited information about preventive health measures and how to handle bird flu cases. "Therefore, we are calling related institutes to pay attention to this problem," he said....
