2-year-old Sumrall girl dies from flu complications

A 2-year-old Sumrall girl diagnosed with the flu has died, Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said Monday.

The girl was diagnosed with the flu strain B a day or two earlier and was brought to a Hattiesburg hospital Sunday, where she was later died from complications, including pneumonia, Benedict said.

Although the Mississippi State Department of Health could not confirm the Sumrall girl's death was from the flu, the agency issued a news release saying the state's first pediatric death for the 2017-2018 flu season was confirmed recently in South Mississippi.

Pediatric deaths are defined as deaths of individuals under 18 years of age...
