MRSA infection shows up at Reeths-Puffer
Muskegon Chronicle

FROM LOCAL REPORTS

REETHS-PUFFER -- Parents of students at Central Elementary School were informed Monday of a case of MRSA infection at the school.

Letters were sent home notifying parents that a student had been infected with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

MRSA is a potentially dangerous type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics and may cause infections, primarily of the skin. It is highly contagious, and health officials recommend hand washing and use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer to prevent its spread.

Reeths-Puffer Superintendent Steve Cousins said the kindergartner learned of the infection Friday. It did not change cleaning procedures at the school, which were stepped up last year after a student at the middle school contracted a MRSA infection, Cousins said.

The daily cleaning regimen at Reeths-Puffer schools includes disinfecting all table-top surfaces and door knobs -- areas in schools considered to be most likely to harbor the bacteria.

The federal Centers for Disease Control advise that schools generally shouldn't be closed because of an incidence of MRSA infection, and that infected students do not need to stay out of school as long as they keep the infection covered.
