Mozambique: Seven Deaths From Cholera in Niassa

Maputo ? Seven people have died of cholera in Lago district, in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa, according to a report in Saturday's issue of the Maputo daily ?Noticias?

The health authorities said that laboratory tests confirmed that the acute diarrhea which the victims had suffered from was caused by the cholera bacterium.

The Lago district administrator, Moura Jorge, said that 126 people displaying cholera symptoms had been treated at the health centre in the district capital, Metangula, and three of them had died. The other four deaths occurred outside of health units.

It is feared that other people may have died of cholera in outlying villages and the information has yet to reach the district or provincial authorities...

The water-borne disease cholera has claimed the lives of 19 people in Mozambique?s flood-stricken northern province of Nampula after 1,600 cases of the ailment were diagonised.

Cabinet spokesperson and deputy Health Minister, Mousinho Saide told journalists after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday that other neighboring provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado are likely to be hit.

?The flood water is subsiding now but it is already contaminated and the health hazard risk is very high, the number of affected could double and deaths may occur as the disease spreads to other regions?, Saide warned...

The death toll from a cholera epidemic in Mozambique that broke out after widespread flooding has climbed to 28, the government said Monday.

There are fears the outbreak is accelerating with the number of infections hitting 2,400 compared with 1,702 cases and 19 deaths reported last week.

"We are particularly concerned by the (situation in the) city of Tete where we are seeing an upsurge in new cases with an average of 70 admissions per day," Benigna Matsinhe, a deputy director in the health ministry, told reporters...

Governor of Mozambique?s worst flood-hit central Zambezia province Abdul Razak, says a cholera outbreak has struck his region, with eight cases being diagnosed since Monday.Noormahomed said none of them have died of the disease so far but there had been 23 cases of serious diarrhoea among 16 children and seven adults, and eight of these had been diagnosed as cholera...

Mozambique cholera death toll rises to 41

​The death toll from a cholera epidemic in northern and western Mozambique has risen to 41 since the country was hit by widespread flooding in December 2014.

Mozambique Ministry of Health spokesman, Quinhas Fernandes, told a press conference on Monday that 4,518 cases of cholera and 41 deaths have been recorded since December 25, 2014.

The number of confirmed cases has more than doubled and the number of fatalities has risen by almost 50 percent over the past two weeks...

Mozambique health authorities in the central Mozambican city of Quelimane say they facing serious difficulties in dealing with the cholera outbreak in the city, following the mob violence which destroyed the cholera treatment centre last weekend, APA lerans here on Saturday.The Quelimane city health director, Rafael Bove is quoted by the Beira-based daily paper, Diario de Mocambique as saying that cholera patients are now treated in a room in the Zambezia provincial hospital.

This small, improvised ward is considered as a highly unsatisfactory solution, since it is impossible to isolate the cholera patients from people suffering from other illnesses undergoing treatment in the same hospital.

Bove believes this is a factor behind an increase in the number of cholera cases recorded this week...

Mozambique: Cholera Lethality Rate Remains Very Low

Maputo ? The lethality rate from cholera in Mozambique is extremely low, at only 0.6 per cent, the Health Minister, Nazira Abdula, told the country's parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, on Wednesday.

She was responding to a question from the parliamentary group of the former rebel movement Renamo, which claimed that her Ministry ?does not act promptly to save human lives at risk from cholera?.

Abdula replied that currently there are cholera outbreaks in three of the 11 provinces - Nampula, Niassa and Zambezia. The cumulative number of cases in all three provinces is 874, of whom five have died, giving a lethality rate slightly less than 0.6 per cent - and considerably lower than the one per cent regarded as acceptable by the World Health Organisation (WHO)...
