Oon Kurniaputra, an adviser to the ministry, said Wednesday that the government will offer those willing to leave temporary homes and two hectares of land so they can start a new life.

Merapi is located on Indonesia's Java island. It has killed 347 people since bursting back to life in late October. More than 20,000 evacuees are still living in makeshift emergency shelters.

Govt faces anger from Merapi victims

Thousands of survivors of the Mount Merapi eruptions staged a rally in Yogyakarta on Monday, demanding that the government fulfill its promise to compensate them for livestock killed during the eruptions.

The protestors arrived in trucks to the governor?s office in Kepatihan and to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) office on Jl. Kenari.

?We want the government to act on its promise,? Kemirah of Wukirsari village in Cangkringan, Sleman, said.

The survivors also demanded that temporary homes for them be built as soon as possible.

The BNPB previously said it would disburse funds to the affected local administrations to purchase livestock for survivors. The agency reported that it would purchase nearly 4,000 cows.

The Agriculture Ministry, in a similar vein, said it would give cows to survivors who lost livestock through a social aid program in its 2011 budget. Residents have reported the death of almost 3,000 heads of cattle in Yogyakarta and Central Java.

The protestors, however, said they felt the authorities were acting too slowly, especially as survivors were in desperate need of cash to start rebuilding their lives.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia appeals to visitors with tropical beaches, beautiful mountains, spectacular reefs and exotic cultures.

But now the country, which lies along the Pacific Rim of Fire and suffers from frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami and volcanic eruptions, is courting tourists interested in viewing its harsher face.

Near the central Javanese city of Yogyakarta, withered vegetation, buried villages, rivers choked with volcanic ash and stone, and refugee camps are the painful legacy of the recent Mount Merapi eruptions that killed over 350 people and made nearly 400,000 refugees.

Yet local travel agencies are adding this as the latest feature of visits to Yogyakarta, seat of an ancient kingdom.

"In the new volcano tour package, we'll take customers to explore the closest village to the peak and see how bad the devastation is," said Edwin Ismedi Hinma of the local tour agencies association.

"Then we'll take them to a river to watch cold lahar flood past," he added, referring to volcanic debris flows.

Yogyakarta. The royal house of Yogyakarta has appointed a son of the late Mbah Maridjan as the new spiritual guardian of nearby Mount Merapi, six months after the latter died when the mountain erupted violently.

Sultan Hamengkubuwono X appointed Asihono, 44, on Monday to replace his late father as head of a team of 17 men. The team is dedicated to preserving traditional ceremonies and maintaining the balance between humanity and the environment on the slopes of one of the world?s most active volcanoes.

The appointment coincided with the celebration of the anniversary of the palace of the sultan of Yogyakarta.

Mbah Maridjan died when Merapi spewed pyroclastic flows ? hot clouds of volcanic ash and gas ? onto his village of Kinahrejo during an eruption on Oct. 26. He had ignored government calls for all residents to evacuate hamlets high on the slopes of the volcano.

INDONESIA: Government to relocate volcano survivors

JAKARTA, 2 May 2011 (IRIN) - The Indonesian government looks set to relocate thousands of survivors of last year's deadly Mount Merapi volcano to safer locations, officials say.

Under a two-year project, Jakarta will provide land, housing, and money to more than 2,700 families whose villages were destroyed in the eruptions; build infrastructure and provide jobs, at an estimated cost of US$158 million, Syamsul Maarif, chairman of the country's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), told IRIN.

More than 13,000 people will benefit from the scheme, including residents of five villages in badly affected Cangkringan sub-district and one in Klaten District.

"With almost all the displaced having moved to temporary shelters, our focus now is how to rebuild communities affected by the disaster," Maarif said, adding that each household would be entitled to 100 sqm of land and 30 million rupiah ($3,500) to build a house.
