More than 53 000 reported cases of influenza in Paraguay

May 5, 2010, 8:26 Asunci?n, May 5 (Prensa Latina) Over 53 000 396 cases of influenza-like illness (ETI) were reported to date by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Paraguay, with presence in 10 of the 18 regions of the country.
The Directorate of Surveillance of the institution reported that the TSIs are in an epidemic phase and are manifested in all ages.
Any sudden with fever of 38 degrees, cough or sore throat in the absence of other diagnoses are classified by the portfolio as influenza-like illness.
The system of "sentinel" established by the health authorities to identify patterns detected influenza acute respiratory infections (pneumonia) in 944 children under five years, focusing on three of the 18 regions.
Compared with the last two epidemiological weeks, Asunci?n, the capital moved from phase to security alert, while San Pedro, Cordillera and Caaguaz?, in the center east of the country, had the opposite process.
Some 600 000 doses of vaccines against influenza A (H1N1) donated by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) arrived in Paraguay last Sunday and 24 hours later began a mass vaccination campaign in major risk groups.
The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Esperanza Martinez, stated that pregnant women, children under two years old and the chronically ill are the priorities to be taken into account in the campaign.
For this weekend is expected arrive in the country a second shipment of 600 000 vaccine doses and a third shipment is expected with about 400 000 biological, the latter from the European Union.
Health authorities will achieve with these figures cover one hundred percent protection of risk groups, told reporters Dr. Carlos Torres, the Expanded Programme on Immunization.
According to the reports of virologic surveillance in the country persist Sinsicial respiratory viruses,
parainfluenza two, one parainfluenza and adenovirus, also detected a positive sign of Influenza A (H1N1) in January.
The director general of the Directorate of Health Surveillance, Ivan Allende, told reporters that until next September there will be more movement of the virus to bind the summer with the usual winter.
