More Dead Birds in the Park (Canada)

More Dead Birds in the Park
September 18, 2006

Dead birds are again showing up in Wascana Centre. Since Sunday night, the Wascana Centre Authority says 26 Grackles have been found dead on the University of Regina campus, near the Luther College building.
Mostly grackles were among the 165 birds found dead in a different part of the park earlier this summer -- they were chalked up to poisoning from a type of pesticide, not used in the park. As of now, the authority has no reason to link the deaths...
Meantime, officials are advising the public to keep their pets on a short leash in the park. Besides the birds, three dogs also died of unusual circumstances over the summer. Officials also want you to report anything suspicious.

Strychnine Killed the Birds
posted September 22nd, 2006

The birds found dead on the University of Regina campus this week were poisoned, and the source was strychnine.

That's the finding from tests on 26 Grackles found near the Luther College building. This is different than the poisoning suffered by more than 160 birds, found dead near Conexus Arts Centre, earlier this summer.

Van Isman with the Wascana Centre Authority says a police investigation is under way to find out who is responsible, and where.

Isman says strychnine can work in as little as five minutes, and, as long as an hour or more, so the actual poisoning may not have happened near the Luther College building where they were found.

Still, the authority is telling people with small children or pets to be cautious in that area.

Students concerned about poison threat
posted September 22nd, 2006

The mystery of what is responsible for killing 26 birds in Wascana Park this week is becoming clearer.

Tests have confirmed the birds found near the Luther College building on the U of R campus died from strichnine poisoning.

The majority of students we talked to said they were concerned by the news. Many either walk, or have friends who walk through the park area with their pets.

The Wascana Centre Authority still can't for sure if all the poison was in that area.

Still they are reminding parents and pet owners to be extremely careful.
