It is a disease that is being talked about more and more. A first confirmed case of monkey pox has been detected in the Principality, Dr Olivia Keïta-Perse, head of the epidemiology and health hygiene department at the Princess Grace Hospital Center, announced on Thursday evening at Monaco Info. Three other patients could also be contaminated according to the CHPG.
As a reminder, this viral disease, which in general is not dangerous, is manifested by a rash, a few days after the onset of fever, which gives lesions on the skin which then turn into scabs, a bit like chickenpox. "In a few cases, which have not yet been observed in France, specifies Dr. Olivia Keïta-Perse, there may be complications such as pneumopathy and encephalitis." And as with Covid, immunocompromised people are also more exposed to complications.
What to do in case of symptoms?
"Apply to the hospital or his attending physician" recommends Dr. Keïta-Perse. She adds "Anyone can catch this disease which is transmitted during close contact, skin-to-skin contact or mucous membrane-to-mucous contact. There is also a component of transmission by droplets or by the air. If the virus is present on a surface and you touch it, you can be contaminated".
If vaccination is not yet possible in Monaco, it could become so. "The government has asked for vaccines, specifies the head of the epidemiology and sanitary hygiene service at the Princess Grace Hospital Center. It is therefore quite possible to consider vaccination in Monaco".

First case in the Principality, what do we know about the monkey pox virus?

A first case of monkey pox has been detected in Monaco, which is taking its first steps.
In France, 1000 cases of monkey pox have already been detected. In the Principality, a first case has just been detected and three other patients could also be infected. On Wednesday, Monaco Info received Olivia Keïta-Perse, Head of the Epidemiology and Sanitary Hygiene Service at the CHPG, to provide more details on this little-known virus.
" It is a disease which is essentially cutaneous in expression, which gives lesions on the skin which resemble the lesions of chicken pox " explains Oliva Keïta-Perse. These lesions then turn into a crust and are caused to fall off. A viral disease that is generally not dangerous except for exceptions. “ In a few cases which have not yet been observed in France, there may be complications such as pneumopathy and encephalitis ” continues the doctor.
“ Anyone can catch the disease. The virus is transmitted in situations of close contact, skin to skin or mucosa to mucous membranes. There is a component of transmission by droplets or by the air ” warns the specialist.
What to do if these skin lesions appear? " You can go to the hospital or talk to your doctor about it, " advises Dr. Keïta-Perse.
In the Principality, the first arrangements have been made. " The Government has requested vaccines, it is possible to consider vaccination in Monaco " concludes the head of service at the CHPG.
