GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) - Life was about to get a little more exciting for Richard and Becky Powers, they were expecting their first child. But right in the middle of all the planning Becky came down with what she thought was just a bad cold, "Had a cold and then it turned into I couldn't breathe."

A trip to the emergency room discovered Becky's lung capacity was failing. "They put on a breathing mask to see if that would help and it wouldn't help at all and they told me they were going to put me out because they had to put tubes down my throat and I said just put me out. And that's the last thing I remember."

At 25 weeks pregnant she hadn't received her flu shot. Dr. Wael Berjaoui, an internist with Spectrum Health, says that's what compromised her health. "Pregnant women have additional risk factors which to some extent have to do with changes in their immune system making them more susceptible to viral infections and especially to influenza," said Dr. Berjaoui.
