Moldova: 1000 ill, public events banned.

Over 1,000 people seeking medical care for an acute respiratory disease since 2-1-07. Public events are banned. They do not say anything about testing for Avian Influenza. The fact that they do not mention it makes me nervous.

CHISINAU, February 5 (Itar-Tass) - Specialists from the Moldovan National Scientific-Practical Center of Preventive Medicine warned on Monday that the country was facing a flu epidemic.

“The Kagul region, where 26 schools were closed last week because of a quick spread of flu among students, has become the epicenter,” the deputy director of the center told reporters. According to Konstantin Spynu, 19 schoolchildren are in hospital in grave condition. In order to avoid the further spread of the disease, the local authorities have banned all public events.

According to the center, over 1,000 citizens in the republic turned to medics with symptoms of an acute respiratory disease as of February 1. Each third was diagnosed with flu.

Does anyone have a map? I know it's Ukraine area.
It is near the H5N1 avian outbreak in Romania last season (between the reported bird cases in Krosnodar and Hungary this year).

This map shows the rivers a lot more clearly - but in case the image doesn't show up, you can find the map at:

Chisinau is on the Byk River, which after joining two other rivers flows into the Black Sea, a short distance from the mouth of the Danube. Moldova is between Romania and the Ukraine.

(guess I'd better find the posts about getting images to show - sorry)

CHISINAU, February 5 (Itar-Tass) - Specialists from the Moldovan National Scientific-Practical Center of Preventive Medicine warned on Monday that the country was facing a flu epidemic.

?The Kagul region, where 26 schools were closed last week because of a quick spread of flu among students, has become the epicenter,? the deputy director of the center told reporters. With that in view, Spynu supposed that within the next two weeks the virus could spread from the south not only to central, but also to northern regions of the country.

Specialists have urged the population to take anti-flu medicines, avoid places of mass congestion and take other preventive measures.
