85 recovering in hospital

KUALA LUMPUR: Eighty-five people suffering from influenza A (H1N1) were in hospital as at 5.30 pm on Tuesday.

They included some of the 75 new cases reported in the 24 hours up to 8am on the same day.

The 85 H1N1 cases were among 624 people admitted to hospital with influenza-like illness (ILI).

Eight of those confirmed positive for H1N1 are in serious condition.

Director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said of the 75 new cases, seven were from the six cluster cases reported in Selangor and Malacca.

One of the cluster cases involved 41 workers of Kilang Plastic V Sdn Bhd in Kampung Air Hitam in Jalan Langat, Klang, who were taken to hospital when they showed symptoms of the disease.

"We took throat swab samples from all of them and are awaiting laboratory results to ascertain if they are victims of the disease."

The other cluster ILI cases were:

- two pupils of SMK (P) Sri Aman, Section 14, Petaling Jaya, of whom one has been confirmed positive and admitted to hospital. Both were treated with anti-viral drugs while 1,211 pupils of the school were being observed for symptoms of H1N1;

- two family members staying at Jalan Teratai 3, Taman Tasik Teratai, Serendah, Selangor, were found to be H1N1 positive while and another was suspected to be a victim of the disease;

- two family members at Km19, Jalan Chinchin, Jasin, Malacca, were treated for ILI symptoms and were awaiting laboratory results to confirm if they were victims of H1N1;

- Four in a family residing at Kampung Ganum, Alor Gajah, Malacca, were found positive for H1N1; and,

- 11 pupils of SRJK (T) Ladang Bukit Kajang, Jasin, Malacca, were treated for ILI symptoms and were awaiting test results.

Seven Influenza-Like Illness Clusters Reported

PUTRAJAYA, April 22 (Bernama) -- Seven influenza-like illness (ILI) clusters were reported in three states as on Thursday at 8am.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said four of the cases were found in Johor, Kelantan (2) and Terengganu (1).

He said that as at 5.30pm yesterday, 24 new Influenza A (H1N1) cases were reported, bringing the total number to 13,298 cases.

He added that 649 ILI cases were still being treated in wards nationwide.

"Of the total, 91 cases had been certified positive for H1N1. Thirteen cases are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, with 11 involving risk factors," he said in a statement here on Thursday.

No death was reported yesterday.

Up at 8:00 am on 23 April 2010, the Ministry received a total of twelve (12) Inclusion of incident reporting cluster of seven (7) states in 'Appendix 1'.

Meanwhile, up at 5:30 pm on 22 April 2010, a total of 59 confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1) reported a cumulative number of cases is 13.357. Inclusion in the number of cases that are treated in the wards in the country is of 603 cases. Of these, 82 cases (13.6%) were confirmed positive influenza A (H1N1). The number treated in the ICU was 12 cases in which nine of them had risk factors.

The Ministry of Health has received three (3) reports H1N1 in dead today. However, only one (1) case only death caused by Influenza A (H1N1) and two (2) cases the cause of death was not caused by direct infection of H1N1. This brings the cumulative number of H1N1 deaths to date is 79.

The three deaths are as follows:

i.Seorang 53 year old male who has multiple risk factors such as disease, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, hypertension, renal failure, and stroke. This case died on 19 April 2010 Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, Kuala Trengganu from Influenza A (H1N1) and the cause of death was "Severe Bronchopneumonia, H1N1 positive with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome".


ii.Seorang 47 year old male admitted to Hospital Kuala Lumpur on 17 April 2010 and died on 20 April 2010. The results of the medical report and discussion of experts from Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Sungai Buloh Hospital, deaths classified as caused by H1N1 is not direct but is caused by complications of various organ dysfunction ("Septic shock with multiorgan failure").


iii.Seorang children 5-month-old male who suffered from the problem "hydrocephalus" which included the University Medical Center on March 15, 2010 for surgical treatment and died on 21 April 2010. The results of the medical report and discussion of medical experts, the death classified as caused by H1N1 is not direct but is caused by infection complications after surgery for the problem of "hydrocephalus" and "Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome"

Ministry of Health would like to continue to remind people that the spread of Influenza A (H1N1) continue to be active in the community. Society must always practice preventive measures that have been divulged before. Meanwhile, up at 5:30 pm on 23 April 2010, a total of 40 confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1) reported a cumulative number of cases is 13.397. Inclusion in the number of cases that are treated in the wards in the country is of 556 cases. Of these, 78 cases (14.0%) were confirmed positive influenza A (H1N1). The number treated in the ICU was 12 cases in which 10 of them had risk factors.

The Ministry of Health has received three (3) reports H1N1 in dead today. However, only one (1) case only death caused by influenza A (H1N1), and two (2) cases the cause of his death was not caused by direct infection of H1N1. This brings the cumulative number of H1N1 deaths to date is 80.

The three deaths are as follows:

i.Seorang 55 year old male with no risk factors for H1N1 infection. Admitted to a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur on 18 April 2010 after suffering respiratory problems. The case has died at 21 April 2010 as a result of infection by influenza A (H1N1) and cause of death was "Severe Bronchopneumonia secondary to H1N1";


ii.Seorang 59 year old male with a history of cardiovascular disease and diabetes have been admitted to Hospital Kuala Lumpur on 18 April 2010 due to respiratory problems. Case died on 19 April 2010 with the death of "Acute coronary syndrome". Revenue reports experts have confirmed that the death was not caused by H1N1;


iii.Seorang 53 year old male with a history of diabetes and gangrene on the right leg. Have included the University of Malaya Medical Centre on 9 April 2010 for suspected of serious infections due to right foot gangrene. Case died on 16 April 2010 with the death of the "Septicaemic shock secondary to diabetic foot gangrene. Revenue reports experts have also confirmed that the deaths were not caused by H1N1.

Obese diabetic woman dies


KUALA LUMPUR- A housewife died of influenza A (H1N1) complications on Saturday.

The woman, aged 48 and who was a diabetic, obese and suffered from hypertension, died at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu due to septicaemic shock, secondary to severe broncho-pneumonia.

Although the number of people dying from complications due to H1N1 is high, director-general of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said only 80 people had died directly from the disease.

As of 5.30pm yesterday, there were 15 new cases of H1N1, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 13,451 between May last year and yesterday.

Dr Ismail said 543 people were admitted in hospitals with 55 of them confirmed positive for H1N1.

Of the confirmed cases, he added, nine were in the intensive care units with seven in serious condition, categorising them in the high-risk group.

"I wish to remind Malaysians that the majority of the deaths related to H1N1 involved people with risk factors such as asthma, diabetes, kidney, heart and lung diseases, pregnancy and obesity. It's very easy for people in high-risk groups to get complications or bacterial infection leading to sepsis which can cause death," said Dr Ismail.

He advised people in high-risk groups to get themselves vaccinated.

Vaccination is administered free at 104 government health facilities nationwide and details of the locations are available in the ministry website at http://h1n1.moh.gov.my. They can also call the hotline numbers 603-88810200/ 0300.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told Bernama eight students from Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Bentong had been confirmed as influenza A (H1N1) positive.

They were among 35 students from the college classified as a cluster case of influenza-like illness since Friday.

Although this case is confirmed positive H1N1 virus infection by PCR test, he also had bacterial infections in the blood and cause death due to complications of "septic shock with multi-organs failure" by a bacterial infection and not caused by the H1N1 virus directly.

Influenza A(H1N1): 8 more ILI cluster cases

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 175,747 people have been vaccinated against Influenza A (H1N1) in Malaysia.


The breakdown: 76,613 health ministry’s frontliners, 49,407 front-line staff of other government agencies such as police and immigration officers and 49,727 members of the public.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican called on people in the high risk category to get vaccinated at the ministry's 104 health facilities.

He said they should take this advice seriously as many of those who died due to complications from H1N1 were people with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, heart and lung diseases and kidney failure as well as the obese.

"Although the number of people getting vaccinated has increased over the past one month, we want many more to come forward, more so with the government giving the vaccine free of charge," he added.

Noting that 36 new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) were reported yesterday, Dr Ismail said: "We are not only getting new H1N1 cases every day but also new cluster Influenza-like Illness, especially among kindergarten kids, schoolchildren, national service trainees and members of the public.'


The total number of people infected in Malaysia with Influenza A (H1N1) since May last year is 13,709. Death The death toll is 81.

At present there are 590 people in hospitals nationwide with Influenza-like Illness and of the number 82 have been confirmed positive for H1N1.

Seven of the H1N1 victims are in intensive care units with five of them in serious condition.

Eight ILI cluster cases were reported yesterday. They included:

* 41 pupils of MRSM Pengkalan Hulu, Perak. One was admitted to hospital and the rest treated as outpatient. About 708 pupils were placed under observation

* two pupils of Sekolah Rendah Agama Bersepadu, Kluang, Johor were treated as outpatient while 465 others were under observation

* three pupils of Sekolah Menengah Tun Aminah, Batu Pahat, Johor treated as outpatient while 1,454 others under observation

* four pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Tunku Mahmood 2, Kluang, Johor treated as outpatient while 434 under observation

* seven pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Tunku Mahmood 1, Kluang, Johor treated as outpatient while 847 under observation'

* three pupils of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dong, Raub, Pahang treated outpatient while 934 under observation


* four orang asli from Kg Meranti (Orang Asli) Nenasi, Pekan, Pahang treated as outpatient while 324 under observation.

PUTRAJAYA, May 1 (Bernama) -- A total of 36 new Influenza A (H1N1) cases were reported until 5.30pm yesterday, bringing the total number of H1N1 cases reported so far to 13,709.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said that of the 590 people with influenza-like illness (ILI) still treated at wards nationwide, 13.9 per cent or 82 cases were certified positive for H1N1.

"Seven of the cases are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with five involving risk factors," he said in a statement on Saturday.

Dr Mohd Ismail said that until 8am today, eight ILI clusters were reported in Perak, Johor and Pahang.

They included at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Pengkalan Hulu, Perak, involving 41 people; Sekolah Kebangsaan Tunku Mahmood 1 and 2, Kluang, Johor, involving 11 people and four people from the Kampung Meranti Orang Asli settlement, Pekan, he added.

He advised the public with risk factors to get the H1N1 vaccination, adding that until yesterday, 175,747 people had received the vaccine.

Seventy six fresh cases of H1N1 influenza have been confirmed in Malaysia, where over 80 people have died of the swine flu virus since May last year, authorities have said.

The latest 76 are among the 592 people who were admitted for the suspected virus on Saturday evening, local media reports said today.

Health director-general Ismail Merican said seven of the confirmed victims were being treated in the intensive care unit of hospitals, with five of them in the high-risk category.

Although no new cases of cluster influenza-like illness were reported since yesterday, Ismail said they were still on high alert.

He said it was important for the people to practise a healthy lifestyle, with a balanced diet, regular exercise, lots of water and enough sleep.

He also asked those in the high-risk group to get them vaccinated against the disease.

The total number of people infected in Malaysia with Influenza A (H1N1) since May last year is 13,709, and over 80 deaths has occurred.

Meanwhile, up at 5:30 pm on May 3, 2010, a total of 31 confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) reported a cumulative number of cases is 13.793. Inclusion in the number of cases that are treated in the wards in the country is of 606 cases. Of these, 79 cases (13.0%) were confirmed positive influenza A (H1N1). The number treated in the ICU is a seven (7) cases where the five (5) of having risk factors. Received no reports of deaths, bringing the cumulative number of H1N1 deaths to this day remains 81.
Ministry of Health would like to remind people that the spread of Influenza A (H1N1) continue to be active in the community.
