A U.S. Army Reserves soldier and Alton native who served in Iraq died on American soil New Year's Eve Day of streptococcus meningitis, just months before his deployment to Afghanistan.
"His wife April called him her 'Gentle Giant;' he was big - 6 feet, 3 inches tall and 250 pounds." said Sandy Strohmeier of Alton, mother of Sgt. Craig Strohmeier, 30, of Festus, Mo. "His life was his family, the service and soldiering - that is where he spent his energies..."
