Three confirmed cases of the virus have occurred in Minnesota, but a more dreaded strain of the virus has not yet shown up in the state.

A highly contagious equine virus is causing neurological problems in an ?unusual? number of Minnesota horses, and at least three have been euthanized because of it, animal health officials said Thursday.

Despite the symptoms experienced by those horses, the strain of the equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is not the more dreaded neuropathogenic strain that can be far more lethal.

?This is not the hot neurological virus that scares people to death,? said Dr. Paul Anderson, who oversees the equine program for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. But even this non-neuropathogenic strain can be devastating, he said...

Virus infecting Minnesota horses
A contagious virus is infecting horses in Minnesota.

So far, five horses in the state and two in Wisconsin have been infected with the equine herpes virus (EHV-1).

While the virus normally infects one to two horses a year in Minnesota, horse owners and the State Board of Animal Health are on high alert.

It?s a normal illness horses can get and comparable to the common cold for humans.

But horse owners and vets are concerned because this normal strain is causing neurological problems...

Twin Cities area horse owners urged to quarantine due to virus outbreak

A small outbreak of a deadly equine virus near the metro area has prompted a call to quarantine all horses for a few weeks, even if they aren't displaying any symptoms of an infection.

There have been seven cases of horses displaying symptoms of neurological defects, of which four have tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), according to Christie Ward, an equine internal medicine specialist at the University of Minnesota.

Three horses have been euthanized. One is recovering. Test results are pending on the others, Ward said.

The first reported case was handled March 7 at a farm north of Stillwater by the Stillwater Equine Veterinary Clinic, according to Dr. Terry Arnesen of the clinic.

The outbreak has so far remained in a region surrounding the Twin Cities, including Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin and Winona counties and western Wisconsin...
