St. Cloud school has seen 4 cases of whooping cough
By Dave Aeikens ? December 24, 2008
St. Cloud school district has reported four cases of whooping cough this year, according to Elisabeth Lodge Rogers, director of special education and student services.
All four cases were at Westwood Elementary School, she said. The district has not seen any other cases in several years, she said.
"It's unusual," said Rogers, whose department oversees nursing services and student health concerns.
Rogers said district staff and local medical professionals were concerned they might see a larger outbreak. That did not develop.
"We had a couple cases a couple weeks ago, We thought it might lead to something and it hasn't," Rogers said.
Students typically miss up to five days of school to recover and make sure they are no longer contagious, Rogers said. Students are required to get inoculations for whooping cough, she said,
In Sauk Rapids-Rice, the district gets maybe two cases a year, Superintendent Greg Vandal said, The district is not seeing any more cases this year than previous years, he said.
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial illness that causes severe coughing episodes.
The Minnesota Department of Health in November issued a health advisory about whooping cough. Douglas County, which includes Alexandria, had reported 24 cases. Minnesota had 275 cases, according to the Department of Health. In 2005, 1,571 cases were reported in Minnesota.
