(KNSI) – A virulent form of bird flu responsible for the euthanization of millions of chickens and turkeys last year has been found again.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health reports the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was verified by a federal lab on Monday in a backyard flock in Le Sueur County.

The site was quarantined, and the birds were depopulated to help prevent the spread of the disease. Officials say they’ve been anticipating the virus’s return and are recalling resources for the fight. In 2022, 4,219,806 birds at 110 sites in Minnesota were lost due to HPAI...

Five Minnesota counties have now reported bird flu outbreaks at turkey farms this month as bird flu continues to threaten a key state industry.

Since the resurgence of the virus in Meeker County early in October, cases have been confirmed in Blue Earth, Becker, Kandiyohi and Redwood counties. More than 100,000 birds were killed to prevent further spread, according to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

About 180,000 birds were culled at two sites in Meeker County earlier this month as the virus struck a large commercial operation in Minnesota for the first time this year...

Nearly 1 million chickens on a Minnesota egg farm will be slaughtered to help limit the spread of the highly contagious bird flu after it was confirmed there, officials said Monday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the virus was found at a farm in Wright County, Minnesota, as well as in three smaller flocks in South Dakota and Iowa. Whenever the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus is detected on a farm, the entire flock is killed as to keep it from spreading to other farms.

In addition to the Minnesota case, the USDA said some 26,800 turkeys will be killed on a farm in McPherson County in South Dakota and nearly 17,000 birds will be slaughtered on two farms in Iowa’s Clay County...
