ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Minnesota health officials say the state is dealing with a rising number of whooping cough cases this year.

The Department of Health says in the first five months of 2012, 670 cases of pertussis were confirmed. That's more than the total number of cases for all of 2011. In the Twin Cities metro, the most populous county, Hennepin, leads the way with 219 cases...

Washington County has seen an increase in pertussis, or whooping cough, cases through Tuesday, with children ages 10 to 14 years particularly affected, according to county Department of Public Health and Environment.

Department officials said 35 whooping cough cases have been reported so far this year, compared to 21 confirmed whooping cough cases in 2011. DPHE officials added that cases are being reported in all age groups...

(ABC 6 News) -- Olmsted County authorities say the number of cases of whooping cough is already four times higher this year, than it was all of last year. Olmsted is the third county in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa to report a rise in whooping cough cases this week...

Whooping Cough Outbreak
Whooping Cough is becoming a serious problem throughout our area.

More than 40 cases have been reported in Albert Lea in the past three weeks.

The start of the infection is similar to a cold, but then the infected will develop a hacking cough followed by a high pitch of breath that sounds like a "whoop".

Freeborn County Public Health Director Sue Yost says they don't know what is causing the outbreak...

A quirk in a computer program is keeping Minnesota's whooping cough outbreak under the radar. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have received no reports from the state's health department on any pertussis cases in 2012. The CDC's weekly report, the MMWR, has recorded 0 cases of the illness for Minnesota through July 14.

The latest data on the number of whooping cough cases in the United States was released earlier today by the CDC. The MMWR for week 28 reported data through July 14, 2012. In the report, Minnesota is shown as having reported zero pertussis cases for the year...

The number of confirmed, probable, and suspect cases of pertussis (commonly known as whooping cough) in Minnesota are the highest they have been in 69 years, and have jumped significantly since just last year.

In 2011, the total number of cases reported in Minnesota totaled 661, zero cases reported in Kanabec County.

This year, the total number of cases reported through Nov. 15 has reached 4,105, seven cases reported in Kanabec County...
