Two cases of swine flu have been confirmed and about 50 people were quarantined at a Lake of the Ozarks summer camp forced to shut down for a week.

Campers and staff members at Camp Sabra, a residential summer camp run by the St. Louis Jewish Community Centers Association, began getting sick last week with mild, flulike symptoms. The symptoms typically lasted 24 to 36 hours, said Margaret Schatz, director of marketing and communications for the camp.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed Monday that two of three specimens sent to the state lab for testing came back positive for the swine flu, or H1N1 virus, said department spokesman Kit Wagar.

?It?s safe to assume some of the other kids probably have it,? Wagar said. ?The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared this a worldwide pandemic. Everybody should know the virus is out there.?

Wagar said the outbreak is the largest flu outbreak in the state since the department began tracking cases of H1N1 in April. As of Friday, Missouri had 53 confirmed cases of H1N1.

About 230 campers and staff members were at the camp. Campers include boys and girls entering grades three through 10. Many campers are from the Kansas City and St. Louis areas, as well as Tennessee, Texas and other states.

State and county health officials were notified of the possible outbreak over the weekend. The camp is following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for dealing with a possible flu outbreak, Wagar said.

The CDC recommends identifying ill campers and staff and keeping them isolated to prevent the spread of the virus. A physician and two registered nurses are at the camp full time, according to the camp Web site.

No one was hospitalized, and the camp began screening all campers for possible illness, Wagar said.

Schatz said the camp, after speaking with officials from the state health department, the CDC and the American Camp Association, ?made the difficult decision to close our doors for seven days.?

Schatz said the camp was working with families to get all children home.

Flu Outbreak Temporarily Closes Camp Sabra
Decision made to close the camp for one week. Sabra will reopen Tuesday, June 30.

Camp Sabra, the Jewish Community Center residential camp in the Ozarks, is closing for one week due to an outbreak of several strains of the flu, including swine flu. The camp is scheduled to reopen by next Tuesday, June 30, said. Lynn Wittels, JCC President and CEO.

?After consulting with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, we made the very difficult decision to close Camp for one week to break the cycle of infection among counselors and campers. Two confirmed cases of the H1N1 (swine flu) have been reported. In addition, many staff and campers have come down with a range of flu-like symptoms lasing 24 to 36 hours,? said Wittels.

Wittels emphasized that the entire Sabra team has been incredibly responsible and professional in how they?ve handled the situation, ?keeping the best interests of staff and kids top of mind. I?d personally and publicly like to acknowledge Craig Neuman, Terri Grossman, the medical staff and entire Sabra team for their persistence, patience and assistance as well as Eli Abeles, chair of the Sabra Committee, who helped make the decision to close Sabra for a week.?

Wittles added that ?By next Tuesday, we hope to welcome back a full compliment of campers and counselors and hope one day we can look back at this situation with the assurance that we did the right thing.?

Flu outbreak hits second Missouri summer camp
By Blythe Bernhard
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
06/24/2009

About 15 campers at Kanakuk Kamp in Branson have tested positive for flu in preliminary tests. More details will be available this afternoon, state health officials said.

It is suspected that the children came down with the swine flu virus that is circulating worldwide. A camp administrator was not immediately available for comment.

Kanakuk Kamps operates Christian sports camps in one-week to one-month sessions, according to their Web site.

Camp Sabra in Lake of the Ozarks temporarily closed this week after state health officials confirmed cases of swine flu in a 9-year-old camper and a 20-year-old staff member.

Kanakuk Kamps deals with flu outbreak in Taney County
By Gene Hartley

* H1N1 flu information from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
* Kanakuk Kamps

BRANSON, Mo. -- Kanakuk Kamps, which operates two Christian sports camps in Taney and Stone counties, has several campers who are sick with flu-like symptoms. Camp officials say they'll have more information on Wednesday afternoon.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports 15 campers tested positive for flu in prelimnary tests, and that state health officials suspect it's the H1N1 (swine) flu that has spread across the world. A camp representative didn't know the source of that information. The representative said the Taney County Health Department also wanted to know the source of the information.

Kanakuk Kamps has one camp on Lake Shore Drive on the east side of Lake Taneycomo, across from Branson. It has a second camp near Lampe in Stone County. Participants attend the camps for one-week to one-month sessions.

Camp Sabra, on the north side of Lake of the Ozarks near Rocky Mount, is temporarily closed this week after the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed a 9-year-old camper and a 20-year-old staff member have H1N1 flu. The camp quarantined about 50 people for a time. That camp is now empty and will be disinfected before more campers arrive next week.

Just saw local television report, showing camp still open for business in Branson. All campers arriving with fevers will be sent home. KY3 news said they still do not believe this is the 'swine' flu.:( Probably just the seasonal summer flu...wait we don't have that here and humidity is above 90%.

There is no Swine flu outbreak at a Branson camp - despite a report that ran on The St. Louis Post Dispatch Web site.
A spokesperson for the camp noted the Taney County Health Department has stated ?There are zero cases of swine flu in the county.?

Calls to the Branson-based camp have been coming in since the St. Louis paper inaccurately reported an outbreak this morning.

LAMPE, Mo. -- Kanakuk Kamps, which operates two Christian sports camps in Taney and Stone counties, has 14 campers in Stone County and four in Taney County who tested positive for Type A influenza. Another 26 or more campers and staff with flu-like symptoms did not test positive for flu.

A spokesman for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and a spokeswoman for the Stone County Health Department says routine tests are being done to see if those with Type A flu also have H1N1 (swine) flu. That testing, which will be done at the state lab in Jefferson City, is routine since the worldwide H1N1 pandemic started in April.

Kit Wagar, spokesman for the state health department, said the tests for H1N1 could be completed by late Thursday afternoon. Kim King, spokeswoman for the Stone County Health Department, called this a routine public health event and said there's no reason at this point to believe the flu is H1N1.

Kanakuk Kamps has one camp on Lake Shore Drive on the east side of Lake Taneycomo, across from Branson. The second camp near Lampe is on Missouri 86 between Lampe and Carr Lane. Participants attend the camps for one-week to one-month sessions.

Wagar said Kanakuk staff told state epidemiologists that the first camper came down with symptoms around June 15 but staffers didn't think much of it until the symptoms began spreading to others.

Camp Sabra, on the north side of Lake of the Ozarks near Rocky Mount, is temporarily closed this week after the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed a 9-year-old camper and a 20-year-old staff member have H1N1 flu. The camp isolated (but didn't quarantine) about 50 people for a time. That camp is now empty and will be disinfected before more campers arrive next week.

Another Missouri camp dealing with flu
By EMILY VAN ZANDT

Eighteen campers
at Kanakuk Kamps in Branson and Lampe, Mo., have tested positive for flu in preliminary tests, camp officials say.

The campers experienced mild, flu-like symptoms including sore throats and fevers, said Doug Goodwin, chief operating officer at Kanakuk.

?At this time there are no confirmed cases of H1N1,? or swine flue, Goodwin said.

State health officials were at the camp today and specimens will be sent to the state lab for further tests. Department of Health and Senior Services spokesman Kit Wagar expects results Thursday.

The camps are in between sessions, and campers are heading home over the next few days. New protocols have been set up to prevent future outbreaks at the camps, which host more than 2,500 campers during each session.

All new Kanakuk campers will have their temperatures taken and parents will be asked whether their child has had the flu recently, or has any flu-like symptoms. Any camper with a fever over 100.5 degrees will not be allowed to attend the camp, Goodwin said.

?Our protocol now is if a camper or a staff person in our camp has a fever, we are now testing them for type A Influenza,? Goodwin said. ?We?ve decided that we?re going to have to send anyone who tests positive home.?

Earlier this week Camp Sabra in Lake of the Ozarks shut down after health officials confirmed two cases of swine flu and more than 50 people became ill. The camp will reopen June 30.

Swine Flu Hits Missouri Campers

By Betsy Bruce

June 26, 2009

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Swine Flu hit another group of campers in Missouri. Late Friday the Missouri Health Department confirmed five random samples from campers at two camps near Branson all tested positive for H-1 N-1 flu. The children were attending one of two camps operated by the Kanakuk Ministries. No ages were available, but Health Department spokesman Kit Wagar said all the campers came from other states.

As many as 40 people at K-West and K-Kountry camps had flu like symptoms. The camp spokesman, Doug Goodwin said Thursday 18 of those tested positive for Type A influenza and the five samples sent to Jefferson City came from those 18. Anyone with the Type A flu was sent home even though the symptoms were mild and lasted 36 to 48 hours.

The Kanakuk Kamps instituted a new protocol for the camp sessions that began Thursday. All campers had to be fever free and parents were required to complete a health questionnaire to be sure they had not been sick recently. The spokesman said cabins and facilities were throughly cleaned before the new students arrived.

On Monday a Jewish residential facility, Camp Sabra near Rocky Mount closed temporarily after two swine flu cases were confirmed.

Swine Flu Scare Cancels JCC Children's Camp

By Charles Jaco

June 23, 2009

LAKE OF THE OZARKS (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - A Swine Flu scare has canceled a children's camp run by a St. Louis organization. Camp Aabra, a Lake of the Ozarks camp run by the St. Louis Jewish Community Center has been closed and the campers sent home. Two kids at Camp Sabra tested positive for the virus and around forty others got sick, none of them seriously.

It started late last week when two kids got sick with flu-like symptoms. Lab tests were negative for swine flu. They got better within a day.

But then, according to Lynn Wittels with the Jewish Community Center, "Other campers started to present with similar illnesses, so we called the Missouri Department of Health."

Tests were run and two tests came back positive for H1N1 or Swine Flu.

Wittels says, "We isolated the children, girls separate from boys, in air-conditioned quarters. There are about, I think, forty or forty-five cases of some type of illness, but in each and every case the symptoms are mild."

Which fits with what scientists know, so far, about the swine flu virus.

Greg Evans with the Institute For Bio-Security, says, "Oh yeah, it's very mild, it's very mild, and so I mean right now what we're seeing is nothing to worry about."

The best defense now is to follow a strict protocol. Camp Sabra was shut. Kids that had never been sick were sent home in buses. Kids who had been sick but recovered travelled separately in vans.

Barry County Summer camp open for business

Staff members at the Kids Across America summer camp near Golden have spent the weekend cleaning, after seven cases of the H1N1 flu virus were diagnosed there last week. Campers were sent home a day early after health officials confirmed those finding. The camps director says the use of dis-infectant chemicals paves the way for a group of up to 800 new campers this week. The director is also asking groups to make sure children are screened for illness before they arrive at camp

Flu outbreak sends 31 campers back home to St. Louis

By Sandra Jordan of the St. Louis American
Wednesday, July 29, 2009 1:43 PM CDT

Summer camp ended early for dozens of St. Louis area children at Sherwood Forest Camp in Lesterville, Mo. The kids developed flu-like symptoms and were sent home with TamiFlu or prescriptions for the medication from local doctors, as well as information for family members from the Centers for Disease Control on how to provide care for those with influenza. The children will quarantined at home for several days until they recover.

Testing at a local hospital indicated at least five of 31 campers tested positive for Type A influenza. No word yet on whether this particular Type A flu bug is actually the H1N1 virus.

As of Tuesday night, state epidemiologists had not received specimens for testing from the camp or the health department. A spokesman for the Missouri Dept. of Health and Senior Services said they learned of the illness as children were being sent home ? and without specimens, the state would not able to confirm the positive cases as H1N1.

?Since most Type A Influenza is thought to be H1N1 influenza, we have been advised to treat it as such,? said Mary Rogers, executive director of Sherwood Forest Camp. ?That includes even children who did not test positive for Type A influenza but are displaying symptoms similar to it.? Rogers described the children?s symptoms as mild.

Parents of all of the campers were notified of the flu outbreak, to give the option of having their children return home early. Sixty campers remained at the site and camp officials said they will receive daily health screenings until the camp session ends August 2.

Sherwood Forest is located in northern Reynolds County, 100 miles south of St. Louis.
*

Kathleen Zimmerman, director of the Reynolds County Health Dept. said through their surveillance system, they follow up and send reports to the state.

?That?s the only incidence we?ve had,? Zimmerman said. ?I believe it?s very much under control and isolated and I think we?ll be good to go from here.?

This is the seventh flu outbreak in Missouri summer camps this year.
