A patient in Jefferson County is being evaluated for a possible Ebola infection, Mercy Hospital Jefferson officials confirmed.

The patient recently returned from West Africa and is considered ?low risk,? according to an email from spokesperson Bethany Pope. A team of staff members who are trained to respond to Ebola are providing care to the patient in a facility that is separate from the main hospital. They are following protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Pope said. The hospital is working with the Jefferson County Health Department to coordinate their response.

Re: Missouri - Medical team evaluates patient for possible Ebola infection in Jefferson County

She had been in West Africa to help with the Ebola crisis, but only in a supporting role and had not been dealing with patients directly.

She was not sick when she came home, but Wednesday she began running a fever.

We don`t know how high and she also began experiencing muscle fatigue which is why the decision was made to admit her very early Thursday morning and begin tests.

Samples have been sent to the state health department in Jefferson City and they expect to know late Thursday evening whether this is or is not a case of Ebola.

The surgery center opened in 2010 so has an up to date isolation room which uses negative pressure to keep any infection from spreading. She is being tended to by two doctors and two nurses each shift, working only with her. All of them are specially trained and wearing personal protective equipment.

All the surgeries scheduled in that facility have been moved to the main hospital.

If this does turn out to be Ebola, it is expected the patient will be moved to a hospital with more resources, though no word on where that might be.

Mercy will not say if the patient is a nurse employed at this hospital.
