The Developmental Center of the Ozarks, a nonprofit that treats children and adults with developmental disabilities, is closing for at least a week because of what is believed to be a fast-moving, contagious viral illness.

We?re in the process of closing,? Executive Director Allan McKelvy said today.
He said more than nine children and five employees have the illness which is characterized by mouth sores. The illness was initially thought to be gingivostomatitis, but McKelvy said doctors have given them conflicting reports about this. The Springfield-Greene County Health Department is in the process of trying to determine what the illness is...

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Preliminary test results from the Developmental Center of the Ozarks have come back negative, leaving health officials in the dark about the identity of a viral illness that caused the non profit to shut its doors for more than a week.

Officials at the Greene County Health Department say Friday's results showed the illness is not the Enterovirus, which is classifed as a hand, mouth, and foot illness.

D.C.O. closed voluntarily March 13th after more than a dozen children and a half dozen staff members went home sick with similar illnesses. The illness is characterised by fever, mouth sores, and rashed.

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department got its first round of test results in the DCO case today. The lab results, from the CDC's office in Atlanta, Georgia, show the individuals the health department tested, tested negative for enterovirus, which is the virus that causes Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). The health department is expecting further test results within the next 10 days.


(Springfield, MO) -- Officials with the Developmental Center of the Ozarks in Springfield plans to reopen its doors Monday.

The reopening follows the outbreak of a virus last week that made more than two dozen students and staff member sick

DCO closed the facility to clean it and to help stop the spread of the illness.

A spokesperson for DCO says a total of 27 people were sick.

The cleaning of the facility continues.

The virus has not been identified but the Springfield-Greene County Health Department says it expects to find out more from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hopefully today.

The Developmental Center of the Ozarks offers therapy and education for people with developmental disabilities. It also has child care for kids without disabilities.
