JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is monitoring reports of sick and dead waterfowl, such as geese and ducks, across the state. The Department is actively collecting birds to determine the cause of illness but suspects highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) to be the cause. Other states, including Kansas and Iowa, are experiencing similar occurrences.

Avian influenza, commonly referred to as bird flu, spreads as birds along the North American flyways intermingle with infected birds from Europe and Asia. The viruses are transmitted from bird to bird through fecal droppings, saliva, and nasal discharges. There is a risk for spillover from wild birds into domestic poultry and then back again from poultry to wild birds, resulting in further spread.

Though HPAI does not present an immediate public health concern, MDC recommends the following:

Do not touch dead geese, waterfowl, or other bird species.
Report any sightings of dead geese to MDC online at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/4KD
Ensure that pets do not come into contact with dead animals to help prevent the spread of disease.
If you have inadvertently come into contact with a dead goose, wash your hands thoroughly and contact a healthcare professional if you experience any unusual symptoms.
Due to ongoing waterfowl hunting seasons, waterfowl hunters should dress game birds in the field whenever possible or at a location away from poultry or other birds. Hunters should also properly dispose of harvest waste by placing the remains in trash bags and disposing of them through trash collection or a permitted landfill. Bald eagles and other raptors are particularly susceptible to avian influenza. This simple action could help prevent bald eagle and other raptor mortalities.

Hunters should also be aware it is possible to transport avian influenza viruses on boats, waders, or other equipment, especially if it isn’t dry before moving it from one site to another. Allowing hunting equipment to dry between outings will reduce this chance.

Avian influenza does not present an immediate public health concern, though on rare occasions it has infected humans and other animals. It is safe to eat poultry and wild game as normal cooking temperatures are hot enough to kill the virus if present. Meat should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

St. Louis Zoo closes two exhibits after dead duck tests positive for bird flu

ST. LOUIS—The St. Louis Zoo is moving some of its birds indoors and closing other exhibits as a precaution against the bird flu, according to a Zoo social media post.

The moves came after staff members retrieved a dead wild wood duck from a lake near the center of the Zoo last week, the post said.

The bird tested positive for Avian Influenza according to preliminary testing. The Zoo is also sending samples for further testing to identify if it was a case of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

Zoo officials say no birds or other animals under its care have been showing signs or have been diagnosed with the virus...

MISSOURI —Missouri conservation officials are asking hunters to take extra caution since bird flu cases have been recorded across the state.

Officials say human infections are rare, but can occur after close exposure to highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Migratory birds traveling along North American flyways can carry the virus and infect domestic birds.

Hunters should dress harvested birds away from other birds, dispose of waste properly and allow gear to dry completely between trips.

Missourians should report sightings of dead waterfowl or other large birds to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is actively monitoring reports of sick and dead waterfowl, such as geese and ducks, and raptors across the state. Testing of these birds has confirmed the cause to be Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or “bird flu.”

Avian influenza spreads among birds through contact with infected feces, saliva, or nasal discharges. Migratory birds traveling along North American flyways can carry the virus and it can move between wild birds and domestic poultry. Symptoms to look for in sick birds include tremors, head tilting, lethargy, loss of coordination, inability to fly or walk properly, or trouble standing upright.

While the risk from HPAI to the general public remains low, sporadic human infections have occurred usually after close exposure. MDC encourages hunters and others to take precautions:

For hunters:
  • Dress harvested game birds in the field or in an area away from poultry and other birds.
  • Dispose of carcasses and waste properly. Seal them in trash bags and place them in household trash or at a permitted landfill. Proper disposal helps protect raptors, including bald eagles, which are often scavengers and are highly susceptible to avian influenza.
  • Allow all hunting gear, boats, and waders to dry completely between trips to help prevent spreading the virus between locations.
For the public:
  • Avoid touching dead or sick birds.
  • Report sightings of dead geese, other waterfowl, raptors, or other large birds at short.mdc.mo.gov/4KD.
  • Do not report songbirds. HPAI has not been detected in any songbirds in Missouri. These species are not considered a significant concern regarding the virus.
  • Keep pets away from dead or dying wildlife.
  • If needing to handle a dead bird, wear gloves (disposable if available), consider a face mask, and wash hands thoroughly when done.
HPAI infections in humans are rare. Contact a healthcare provider if experiencing any unusual symptoms of possible infection, such as eye redness, respiratory problems, and fever. It is safe to eat properly handled and cooked poultry. Cooking meat to an internal temperature of 165°F, helps destroy the virus if present.
