Missoula Infant Dies After Probable Swine Flu Diagnosis

A Missoula infant dies after a battle with H1N1 influenza and other infections. According to the family spokesperson, Conner Hainer-Zavarelli passed away on October 18th at 1:30 PM at a Seattle Hospital. An autopsy will be performed. We're told that, most likely, the H1N1 influenza will be a secondary cause of death. Doctors tell the family that Conner's body was working overtime to fight the Swine flu when another infection set in. We're told that infection is Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, or in other words, bacterial meningitis. That's when Conner's infection worsened to the point where he was life flighted to Seattle. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more information.

A Missoula baby is fighting for his life in a Seattle hospital after being diagnosed with H1N1 influenza. The seven month old is now on life support. Conner Hainer-Zavarelli started showing flu-like symptoms last Tuesday and on Thursday, his aunt, Tiffany, took him to Community Medical Center. Doctors confirmed that he had the Swine flu. By Friday morning, Conner was vomiting blood and bile and had stopped breathing. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors had to resuscitate him three times before he was lifeflighted to Seattle. Doctors say that while he was fighting the flu, another infection set in. His aunt says before the flu, Conner was a completely healthy baby. The family is in desperate need of financial and moral support. If you would like to help, you can call Debra Dodge at 493-1297.

The mother of the Missoula infant who died from influenza complications is asking the community to help get her baby home.

She says they don't have the money to transport 7-month old Conner Hiner-Zaverelli back home from Seattle.

Conner's parents say it will cost about $500 just to transport him from Seattle. Montana News Station's Irina Cates sat down with the family in an exclusive interview to learn more about their heartache.

Family members called Conner because he loved to play in his bouncer so much.

"Just last Monday he was so alive and he liked to eat and he jumped in his bouncer and he was just easy" said mom Stephanie Zavarelli.

Conner's family says he was a very happy, special boy who had a smile that lit up his big, brown eyes.

"Loved to crawl, get up on things, get into stuff. He even got into the dogs water once...it was cute" Connor's aunt Tiffany Martin told us.

Tiffany also remembered how much Conner loved to eat. "He could eat two huge jars of baby food, plus an 8 ounce bottle, plus wanted more at one sitting. And he'd eat that food in like two seconds."

"He loved being kissed on the neck...loved being held-all the time, by everybody" added Brandy Hiner, another of Conner's aunts.

Conner was taken to Community Medical Center with flu symptoms a week ago, and then last Friday he was flown to Seattle in critical condition when doctors found he developed a secondary infection of bacteria meningitis, which ultimately took his life.

"This bacteria just took over because he had such a low immune system from what we thought was the flu" Stephanie explained.

Now his parents just want to be able to afford to bring Conner's body back to Missoula and to give him a funeral.

"We just love him and want him to come home" said Stephanie.

"We just need financial help in pretty much everything. Funeral costs, we need money to get him transported from Seattle over here" added Connor's dad Mike Zavarelli.

Conner would have turned 8 months old on Friday and is survived by his parents, two brothers, a sister and several other family members

A fund has been set up for anyone who would like to donate money to assist the family and the family is asking for anything people can do to help cover funeral and other costs.

Donations for the Zavarelli Family fund can be sent to Montana First Credit Union; C/O Conner Hiner-Zavarelli; 2330 South Reserve Street; Missoula, MT 59801. People can also call (406) 728.1790 to find out more information.

Meanwhile, the Loose Caboose in Missoula will be setting out donation boxes on Friday to help out the family. In addition, some employees of the coffee kiosk chain will be donating the tips they receive on Friday to help pay for the family's expenses.
