MEEKER COUNTY, Minn. — A commercial turkey flock in Meeker County was confirmed on April 11 to be infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as HPAI or avian influenza, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

The Meeker County flock included 70,100 commercial turkeys.

This is the first outbreak of avian flu in a commercial poultry flock in 2024. The last case in Minnesota was confirmed on Dec. 27, 2023, when 78,800 turkeys in Todd County were impacted...

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Animal Health and Wildlife Officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI H5N1 related events. Affected population counts are based on estimated inventories from the date the outbreak was first reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health. HPAI events are now closed and control areas have been released in the following States: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. These States have not had any recent HPAI events and have demonstrated: • Required surveillance in the State and control areas has been completed with negative results for HPAI. As a precaution, additional enhanced surveillance may continue in the State and area. • Depopulation of infected premises has been completed and appropriate disposal was implemented or completed. • Cleaning and disinfection of the infected premises has been completed (including, but not limited to, outside areas of premises, equipment, trucks, and other fomites). Note (26/10/2022): After reassessment by field investigators, outbreak OB_107904 has been designated as non-poultry premises and subsequently removed from this event.

The presence of the virus is confirmed in two more commercial turkey flocks...

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that on June 18, the presence of HPAI was confirmed in a flock of 73,800 commercial meat turkeys in Pipestone County and a flock of 114,600 commercial meat turkeys in Swift County.

These are the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] and 13[SUP]th[/SUP] commercial poultry flocks to be struck by the virus in 2024 alone. During the 2022-24 outbreak, a total of 128 flocks have been affected, making Minnesota the state with the most flock infections over the past three years.

It is also the state with the most premises to be affected by HPAI in recent weeks. The past four flock infections have been in Minnesota.

This is the first HPAI case in Swift County of 2024, but the county had one flock affected there in 2023 and five flock infections in 2023. This is the first flock in Pipestone County to be struck by HPAI during the past three years.
