Nearly half a year after the state's last detection of the virus, avian influenza has been found in a southern Minnesota turkey flock, according to animal health officials.

The Redwood County flock "showed signs of increased mortality" over the weekend, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health said. Testing confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus, colloquially known as bird flu.

This is the first time the virus has been detected in Minnesota since April 23...

[plus 3.86 million in September...]

3,390,000 birds "depopulated" in last 30 days due to bird flu

Oct 27, 2025 Updated 21 hrs ago

(Willmar MN-) The Minnesota Board of Animal Health says in the last 30 days, 29 commercial turkey operations and 31 backyard flocks have been hit by bird flu. That amounts to 3 million 390 birds which have been "depopulated." The most recent reported infection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was in a flock of more than 132,000 birds in Meeker County last Wednesday. The bird flu reappeared in Minnesota in mid-September after a 5-month break as wild birds, who spread the virus, began migrating south.
