Two siblings in the Twin Cities metro area have confirmed cases. The first case was in a one-year-old who had recently traveled out of the country and developed symptoms after returning. The child’s sibling later tested positive, too. Both children are unvaccinated.​..

MINNEAPOLIS — After two siblings in Minnesota came down with confirmed cases of measles last month, state health officials reported a third case on Thursday.

One of the three cases was a result of exposure outside the United States, the Minnesota Department of Health said. The other two are linked to that initial case.

The infected siblings live in the Twin Cities, MDH said, but gave little other information about any of the cases. When the first two cases were discovered, health officials said the risk to the public was "extremely low."​...

HENNEPIN COUNTY, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) flagged three measles cases in Anoka, Hennepin and Ramsey counties on Thursday, highlighting the importance of vaccines.

Measles has been on the rise in Minnesota in 2024, and these cases make a total of 15 since January, according to MDH. All cases have occurred in unvaccinated children, and more than half of those patients have been hospitalized.

​MDH said in a news release that the three cases are not directly linked and involve people who have not traveled, but anyone who is not vaccinated against measles could be at risk...

Measles cases rise again, vexing Minnesota officials trying to nail down cause
Investigation continues to link three mysteriously unrelated infections to overseas sources, or earlier Minnesota cases.

A sporadic burst of measles in Minnesota this summer is vexing public health officials, because they haven’t yet nailed down the sources of this highly contagious disease.

A public health investigation is ongoing to find the origins of three infections last month of children 10 and younger from Anoka, Hennepin and Ramsey counties who had no apparent connections with one another. Those three infections led to seven more infections that were reported this week among children who were siblings, cousins, friends or neighbors, said Jayne Griffith, a senior epidemiologist with the Minnesota Department of Health.

The state total stands at 22 measles cases so far this year, all among unvaccinated people, and a couple more are expected to be added.

The latest increase “hasn’t taken us by surprise,” Griffith said. “We have been prepared for the close contacts to become cases.”

Follow-up talks with the three infected children and their parents have unearthed details about the days before they contracted measles.

Griffith said there might be a tentative connection that could ultimately trace the origins of their infections back to children who contracted the measles in May as a result of overseas travels. That would be a relief, because the alternative is something state health officials want to avoid: community spread of measles within the state itself.​..

Minnesota measles cases reach 29 infections this year

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - The Minnesota Department of Health reports that 29 measles cases have been detected in the state.
The brief

Out of the 29 cases reported in Minnesota during the year 2024, 17 have not been linked to travel outside the United States.
Seven cases reportedly came from exposure that happened outside the U.S., while five happened within the U.S. but were linked to an imported case.
There were 22 cases reported two weeks ago.

What we know

Health officials stress the importance of immunization in order to prevent getting measles.

Of the 29 reported measles cases this year, 17 were reportedly not linked to travel outside the country, which is often how the disease reaches Minnesota.

Increasing measles cases in metro area highlight need for vaccination
Anyone who is not vaccinated is at risk of getting sick from measles

Health officials are urging families to make sure they are up to date on their measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as a measles outbreak continues to impact unvaccinated children in the Twin Cities metro area.

Since May, 30 cases of measles have been reported in Minnesota as part of this outbreak. Initial cases were reported in May and June, but the outbreak started to take off at the end of July. Cases have ranged in age from 7 months to 10 years, with one case in an adult, and about 1 in 3 cases have required hospitalization. So far, the outbreak is largely affecting unvaccinated children in the Somali community in Minnesota. However, anyone who is not vaccinated is at risk of getting sick with measles.

“Measles is currently circulating, and infections can be severe,” said Dr. Ruth Lynfield, state epidemiologist and medical director at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). “I urge all parents to be sure that their children are vaccinated because we know that vaccination offers the best protection.”​...

Minnesota facing growing number of measles cases

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Measles is much more than a rash. It can lead to deafness, brain damage and death.

The Minnesota Department of Health has reported 46 cases of measles in the state so far this year, which is the most since 2017.

Forty-six may not sound like a lot, but infectious disease experts are worried.

"We are all very terrified that this is just going to explode because we have such low vaccination rates in certain pockets of our population, which put a lot of kids at risk," said Dr. Stacene Maroushek, pediatric infectious disease specialist with Hennepin Healthcare...

A measles outbreak in Hennepin County has spread to an elementary school in Minneapolis, bringing the total number of cases in Minnesota, since May, to 51.

Minnesota Department of Health officials are contacting unvaccinated students who may have been exposed. Minneapolis Public Schools asked parents via email to vaccinate their families and update immunization records. School and health officials declined to name the school, citing privacy concerns. It’s unclear how many students might be sick with measles, and how many unvaccinated students might have been exposed.

About 70% of the students at the school are fully vaccinated and 2% have non-medical exemptions, according to MDH.​...
