Minnesota Reports First Case Of Monkeypox

(FOX 9) – Minnesota has reported its first case of monkeypox, and state health officials are investigating.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) on Monday reported a presumptive case of monkeypox virus infection in an adult in the Twin Cities, a news release said. Initial testing was done on Saturday at MDH’s lab and confirmatory testing is being done at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.

MDH says the patient likely was exposed to monkeypox while traveling abroad. They are receiving outpatient care, and MDH is conducting contact tracing with local health partners to identify anyone who may be at risk due to direct close contact with the person while they were infectious...
 
More cases of monkeypox identified in Minnesota

ST. PAUL — Minnesota health officials on Friday, July 1, said they have identified multiple new monkeypox infections in the state, bringing the total number of cases to six.

All the cases identified so far are in adults living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. All had a history of travel, including domestic travel, or had direct contact with someone who had traveled. On June 25 Minnesota identified its first case, which was in a person who had traveled to Europe. However, community spread not attached to travel could soon be identified as it has in other states, the Minnesota Department of Health said.

While case numbers remain low, it's possible not all patients with monkeypox have sought testing. Officials said they’re concerned the number of infections could grow rapidly unless people who are infected take steps to protect themselves and seek medical care.

“It’s clear that monkeypox has come to Minnesota,” state Epidemiologist Dr. Ruth Lynfield said in a news release. “While our current cases are associated with travel outside Minnesota, we expect we will soon see cases among people who have no travel history or contact with someone who did, indicating that spread within social networks in Minnesota is occurring.”

Lynfield said it's possible many people with cases are not seeking medical attention and that the number of cases nationally is much higher than what current reports show. ...

ST. PAUL — Thirty-three Minnesotans have tested positive for monkeypox since the illness was first detected in the state and health officials expect additional cases have not yet been detected.

Minnesota Department of Health leaders on Friday, July 29, offered an update about the virus' spread in Minnesota and said that all but one case had been reported in the Twin Cities metro area.

Monkeypox is a viral illness that can cause fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, head and body aches and a rash that can resemble pimples or blisters. The sickness is spread through direct and indirect contact with the virus, like through contact with bodily fluids, lesions or respiratory particles.

And like other parts of the country where monkeypox has been detected, officials said that Minnesota cases had so far been reported in men who are gay, bisexual or have had sex with other men.

Those who tested positive in Minnesota had traveled or had engaged in physical contact with someone who had monkeypox, they said...
