Week 10: Local
7 new deaths; total 176 (3 of which were pediatric)
The percentage of tests positive for influenza during week 10 as reported from the MN Lab System (MLS) Laboratory Influenza Surveillance Program
rapid influenza testing: 13.3%
PCR testing: 11.8%
Viral culture: 2 influenza A positives, 5 influenza B positives
The most commonly cultured strain identified so far this season at the MDH Public Health Laboratory is influenza A/H3.
37 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza during week 10. Since the start of the influenza season, 2,945 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
7 influenza-related deaths were confirmed during week 10. Since the start of the influenza season, 176 influenza-related deaths have been confirmed.
1 long-term care facility (defined as a skilled nursing facility) reported a confirmed outbreak of influenza during week 10. Since the start of the season, 148 outbreaks of influenza in long-term care have been reported.
2 schools reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI) during week 10. Since the start of the season, 479 outbreaks of ILI in schools have been reported.
The percentage of influenza-like illness visits to outpatient clinics involved in the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance (ILINet) was below the regional baseline at 0.55%.
Circulating Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance
Of specimens tested by PCR from 3 outpatient sites for circulating viral respiratory pathogens in the previous 3 weeks for which data are available:
25% were positive for influenza, of these
53% were positive for influenza B
47% were positive for influenza A/H3
15% were positive for respiratory synctial virus (RSV)
7% were positive for coronavirus, of these
50% were positive for coronavirus NL63
40% were positive for coronavirus OC43
10% were positive for coronavirus 229E
4% were positive for rhinovirus
4% were positive for human metapneumovirus
1% were positive for adenovirus
Of specimens culture positive for a viral pathogen at Minnesota?s 6 virology laboratories during week 10:
32 were positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
5 were positive for influenza B
4 were positive for parainfluenza virus 3
