Surge in Viral Diseases in the Country
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17:27 IST
Viral diseases like dengue, chikungunya, japanese encephalitis and swine flu have been reported during the year from different parts of the country. Thenumber of cases reported due to these diseases in the country during the year are given in Annexure.
For prevention and control of vector-borne diseases including dengue, chikungunya and japanese encephalitis, Government of India is implementing an integrated National Vector Borne Disease Control Programame (NVBDCP) under the overarching umbrella of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). The main strategy for prevention and control of vector-borne diseases advocates for integrated vector control, early case detection and complete treatment, and behavior change communication. Government of India provides technical support and also supplements the efforts of States/UTs by providing funds and commodities as per their project implementation plans under NRHM. However, the programme is primarily being implemented through the State/UT Governments.
The community surveillance to detect clusters of influenza like illness is being done through Integrated Disease Surveillance Project. 45 laboratories throughout the country (26 in Government Sector and 19 in Private sector) have been identified for testing of samples. Hospitals have been identified in States for strengthening isolation facilities. Critical care facilities at district level have also been earmarked. States have been requested to earmark large number of screening centres for influenza like illness. Adequate quantity of Oseltamivir capsules and pediatric syrup are available in the stock at the Centre and States level. Adequate stock of PPEs, three layered surgical masks and N-95 masks are also available.
These viral diseases are seasonal in nature and their transmission depends on climatic conditions, ecological factors and human behavior. Despitemosquitogenic conditions in different parts of India during the monsoon this year, the preventive and control measures taken by the Government helped in the containment of these diseases. The number of cases have started coming down considerably in different parts of the country. In future, the Government of India will keep working with the State Governments in implementing prevention and control measures more vigorously.
