Mild Swine Flu Outbreak in SF
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The San Francisco Health Department is reporting a significant increase in influenza over the past few weeks, and health officials think swine flu is the culprit.
They describe it as a mild pandemic of swine flu, and say there is no need to panic. Epidemiologist Lisa Winston says this summer flu season is quite unusual.
"We know right now that most of the flu that is here in the Bay Area is swine flu," she said.
Winston added that most people are not being tested because the there's little doubt about the diagnosis.
Dr. Susan Fernyak, the head of disease control for the health department, says if people come down with the flu, they should just stay home.
"It's sick people going out into the community- going to school, going to work, going to the grocery store," she said. "That's where the majority of transmission happens."
Even those with severe symptoms are being urged to call their doctors rather than go to the doctor's office to reduce the spread of infection.
The health department has set up a swine flu information line, and people can call 311 to get their questions answered.
While only 19 swine flu cases have been diagnosed in San Francisco, health officials say thousands have the disease.
