A wildlife refuge in northwestern Minnesota is temporarily closed after a bird disease was confirmed in a sick American white pelican.
The Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge is near Middle River and Grygla in Marshall County.
The disease found is a virulent strain of Newcastle's disease. It can be especially contagious to cormorants and pelicans but also can kill domestic poultry that aren't vaccinated.
The disease poses minimal risk to humans.
John Braastad, an assistant manager at Agassiz, said refuge staff found the sick pelican in July and sent it to a lab. Test results came back late Wednesday. ? Associated Press:tiphat: http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_10451675?nclick_check=1
