3 people in their 20s in Oakland County die from flu

The flu has claimed the lives of three people in their 20s in Oakland County, health officials said Tuesday.
The deaths are the first flu-related fatalities for the county this winter, said Kathy Forzley, manager and health officer of the Oakland County Health Division. Last year, four people in Oakland County died from the flu.

WASHTENAW COUNTY: Public health department reports more deaths from flu
ANN ARBOR ? At least three adults treated at the University of Michigan Health System have died from the flu this winter as the seasonal flu continues to spread rapidly in the state and impact more young adults than usual.
While reporting of adult deaths is not mandatory, the Michigan Department of Community Health said this week that six adults in the state have died from influenza as well as one child under the age of 18.
In addition, the Washtenaw County Public Health Department reported Friday afternoon two adults in Washtenaw County, both older than 65, died from the flu. These two cases are separate from the three deaths the U of M hospital reported. According to the county, both of the individuals had severe underlying health conditions.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. ? Three people over 50 have died recently in Kent County after contracting H1N1 influenza A, the Kent County Health Department said Thursday.
All the deaths were of people over age 50, though several deaths were earlier reported in eastern Michigan of healthy young adults, the department?s statement said. At least 26 people in Kent County have been hospitalized out of more than 400 reported flu cases.
Two of the cases that resulted in death involved previous ?underlying medical conditions,?
said Adam London, the department?s administrative health officer.
One Lenawee County resident has died and eight have been hospitalized with confirmed cases of influenza, the Lenawee County Health Department announced Wednesday.
Almost 500 cases of flu-like illnesses have been reported in the county by schools and health providers, said Elaine McDonald, director of nursing at the health department. So far, 39 flu cases have been confirmed by laboratories. Those infected range in age from 4 to 90 years of age.
The identity of the man who died was not released. He was in his 50s, McDonald said. It was not known if he or any of the eight hospitalized victims had received a flu vaccination.
Increasing flu activity is being reported in neighboring counties and nationwide. Two flu-related deaths were reported in Monroe County and four in Lucas County, Ohio.

In Kalamazoo County, both of the people -- a man and a woman -- were between the ages of 50 and 65. The woman died at home and had recent complications. The man was hospitalized for COPD and pneumonia when he died.

"For adults, [adult cases of flu are] not reportable, so we don't know if they actually received the vaccine or not," Lisa LaPlante said.
Van Buren County is not releasing any information on the one person who died there.

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Kalamazoo County Health Department is confirming the deaths of three people over the age of 50 from flu complications.
The "Kalamazoo Gazette" identifies one as 60-year-old Mark Sanford, who died on January 15th after the H1N1 strain attacked his lungs and put him in the hospital for eleven days. An adult in Van Buren County died from the flu last week.
