H1N1 Outbreak In Ann Arbor: ?These Patients Are Very, Very Ill?
January 2, 2014 7:07 PM

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) ? Health officials at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor say they?re dealing with a severe outbreak of the flu.

A minimum of six people were in the intensive care unit on Thursday, as doctors dealt with what was believed to be multiple cases of H1N1, also know as ?Swine Flu.?

According to Dr. Lena Napolitano, director of the University of Michigan?s Surgical Critical Care and Intensive Care units, several patients ? mostly young or middle-aged ? are not doing well.

?They are on very advanced life support,? Napolitano told WWJ Newsradio 950.

?There are other intensive care units ? our medical ICU, our pediatric ICU ? who also have other patients,? she added.? And I don?t have those exact numbers; but suffice it to say, it is a striking increase, and these patients are very, very ill...?

Deadly H1N1 flu ? the influenza virus strain behind the 2009 pandemic ? continues its resurgence in Michigan, leading to the deaths of at least one child and three adults, according to state health and hospital officials.

About a dozen adults and children ? patients who previously were healthy ? have been on life support at the University of Michigan Health System?s hospitals due to the virus.

Three adults have died, according to a health system spokeswoman. In December, the state reported that an infant from central Michigan had died from H1N1.

Potentially deadly H1N1 ? the influenza virus strain behind the 2009 pandemic ? continues its resurgence in Michigan, with three more deaths reported by hospital officials.

About a dozen adults and children ? patients who previously were healthy ? have been on life support at the University of Michigan Health System?s hospitals because of the virus, according to the hospital system.

Three adults have died, according to a health system spokeswoman. An infant from central Michigan also has died from H1N1, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.

?These deaths are among previously healthy individuals. This is not the group that the public usually thinks about as being susceptible to serious illness with influenza,? said Dr. Matt Davis, chief medical executive for the state health department and a U-M professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases and of internal medicine...

ANN ARBOR: U of M Health System reporting 15 to 20 people in intensive care for severe flu

ANN ARBOR ? The flu might be worse for young adults this year as physicians report that a particular strain, known as H1N1, is more prevalent.

Area hospitals including St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac have reported an increase in hospitalized patients with the flu last week. And the University of Michigan Health System reported Monday between 15 and 20 adults and children are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. Most are young and otherwise healthy and were transferred to U-M from other hospitals because their flu was so severe.

MDCH concerned about severe flu activity: Urges individuals to get vaccinated

LANSING ? Influenza activity is on the rise both nationwide and in all regions of Michigan. Public health officials are noticing an increase in patients of all ages being admitted to hospitals for serious influenza disease. To date, a larger proportion of these hospitalizations are occurring in young and middle-age adults as compared with most influenza seasons. In addition, one pediatric influenza-associated death has already been reported in Michigan during this influenza season.

Although the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) does not require reporting of adult influenza deaths, at least six deaths have been reported as of Dec. 21, 2013. Currently, more than 90 percent of positive influenza specimens at the MDCH Bureau of Laboratories are the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, severe disease was also seen in young and middle-age adults. Patients with underlying medical conditions or obesity have an increased risk for severe complications from this virus.

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Widespread cases of the flu are prompting one hospital in West Michigan to take extra precautions. Borgess Medical Center is limiting visitors, it says, as a proactive safety measure. According to a statement from the hospital, visitors must now be 12 years of age and older, with an exception made to siblings of patients. In addition, visitors to Borgess Critical Care Units, and the Birthing Center are now limited to immediate family only, and only two visitors per patient will be allowed to visit in the Emergency and Trauma Center.

ANN ARBOR: Severe flu striking young healthy people

ANN ARBOR ? More than a dozen adults and children were on life support at the University of Michigan Health System?s hospitals last week, because of flu.

Most are young and otherwise healthy, and were transferred to U-M from other hospitals because their flu was so severe. Most have the H1N1 strain of flu.

And as far as hospital staff can tell, these patients either didn?t get the flu vaccine at all -- or didn?t get it in time to protect them fully. This year?s flu vaccine includes protection against H1N1 flu.

At the same time, a number of other flu patients in less-severe condition are also recuperating in other U-M hospital beds. Hundreds more with flu-like symptoms have sought care in U-M emergency departments and clinics in recent weeks.

Flu on the Rise; 27 New Cases in Michigan

Another 27 cases of the flu have been confirmed since a week ago, bringing the total number to 169.

157 of those cases are H1N1, and that's the low estimate according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.

"Just this morning we had 11 positive cases of the flu," said Christina Helms M.D. at Lansing Urgent Care.

One of those 11 positive was Carrie Rathbun-Hawks husband.

"He does in fact have it. I haven't gotten my flu shot so I decided now is probably a good time," said Rathbun-Hawks.

Allegiance Health reports 'several' cases of H1N1 at facility, 13 cases confirmed in Jackson County

JACKSON, MI ? The potentially deadly influenza strain H1N1 continues its reappearance in Michigan, with cases in the Jackson-area on the rise according to Allegiance Health officials.

Allegiance Health Communication Director Jeff Kapuscinski said the hospital has had "several" influenza-associated hospitalizations, none of which have been transferred to another facility.

"Of the patients tested for influenza, all have tested positive for influenza A," Kapuscinski said. "Of those specimens sent for subtyping, all have been H1N1."

Three young adults die from flu in Oakland County

At least three people have died in Oakland County from the flu this winter and all of them were in their 20s, according to the Oakland County Health Division.

This follows a state report that six adults and one child have died from the flu statewide.

?We always believe these numbers to be understated,? said Kathy Forzley, manager and health officer for Oakland County Health Division. ?What?s different this year than last year is the ages of the deaths are 23, 25 and 29.?

4 in Michigan Die from H1N1 Swine Flu; What the CDC Says About Symptoms

At least four Michiganders have died from a deadly strain of H1N1 and public health officials are pleading with residents to get a flu shot if they haven?t already.

Two of the three adults who died live in Washtenaw County, WILX.com reports. An infant in mid-Michigan also died.

The University of Michigan Health System said last week that at least a dozen adults and children were in intensive care with the flu. Most are otherwise healthy, but the outbreak is causing some anxious d?j? vu for Dr. Lena Napolitano, the associate chair for critical care in the U-M Department of Surgery, who is in charge of treating some of the most critically ill patients.
