(10/10/12) - New country-wide numbers show nearly 20 more cases of fungal meningitis linked to contaminated steroid shots.

This comes after health officials confirm a 56-year-old Genesee County woman is the latest to die from the outbreak.

In Michigan, there are at least 28 cases of meningitis - including three deaths. The other victims are from Washtenaw and Livingston Counties.

As of October 10, 2012, Michigan's fungal meningitis case count associated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention multi-state investigation is 29 cases and three deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration are coordinating a multi-state investigation of meningitis among patients who had received steroid injections. A potentially contaminated product is suspected to be the cause of the outbreak. Several cases of illness have been reported in Michigan to date and a response is being coordinated between local public health, the four Michigan facilities in receipt of the recalled product and the Michigan Department of Community Health. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A Michigan Department of Community Health spokeswoman says a person from Cass County, Mich. has died from fungal meningitis after being injected with a tainted back pain medication at an Indiana clinic.

Spokeswoman Angela Minicuci said Thursday the person contracted the disease while being treated for back pain in Indiana. She provided no further details.

"Federal officials confirmed five new cases of fungal meningitis in Michigan Monday afternoon,bringing the total number of patients associated with the outbreak in the state to 46, including three deaths.

Three of the newly-identified cases were reported from St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Lauren Smoker said Monday. As of Monday, 36 fungal meningitis patients are currently hospitalized at the facility.

Patients who have had symptoms of fungal meningitis at any St. Joseph Mercy Health System facilities were referred to the Ann Arbor location for treatment, hospital officials have said.

Overall, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor has seen 40 cases linked to fungus-contaminated steroid injections that have been blamed for the meningitis outbreak: Two patients have been discharged, one patient had a joint infected with fungus, and one patient died, Smoker said.

Smoker said no further information could be released about the two patients who were discharged.

A patient is still undergoing treatment at the University of Michigan Health System, officials said Monday. UMHS reported the other of its two fungal meningitis patients died last week. Family members identified that patient as Lillian Cary, 67, of Howell."

A Michigan man is battling meningitis after receiving tainted steroid injections with his wife, who died Sept. 30 from the same infection.

George Cary, 65, and his wife Lilian, 67, had spinal injections of methylprednisolone acetate for back and neck pain in August, the Associated Press reported...

"Officials say an 88-year-old Ingham County woman is the ninth Michigan resident to die in a national meningitis outbreak.

Michigan Meningitis Investigation Includes Growing Number of Epidural Abscess Cases

MDCH, LARA, and St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Respond Quickly to Growing Need

LANSING - As of Wednesday, Nov. 14, Michigan's case count related to the ongoing multistate fungal meningitis investigation includes more epidural abscess cases than meningitis cases. As of Nov. 16, the current case count for Michigan is 158 including 64 meningitis cases and 86 cases of epidural abscess, in addition to seven joint infections and one stroke.

Due to the evolving nature of the investigation, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) worked quickly during the week of Nov. 12 to grant emergency Certificates of Need (CONs) for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor continues to evaluate and treat more patients related to this investigation than any facility nationally.

MDCH expedited the review of a CON to expand the operating rooms (OR) capacity, as well as granted an emergency CON to employ the use of a mobile MRI service at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. MRI scans and ORs are necessary to detect and treat the growing number of cases, especially those presenting with an epidural abscess. MDCH worked with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to quickly grant these two CONs.

"We at MDCH recognize the critical importance that testing and treatment capacity plays in protecting the patients involved in this investigation," said James K. Haveman, Director of the MDCH. "Thanks to the responsiveness and cooperation of our partners at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and LARA, we are working swiftly to detect and treat as many cases as we can, as soon as possible."

For patients who have contracted meningitis through the contaminated steroid injections prepared by the New England Compounding Center (NECC), located in Framingham, Mass., symptoms include fever, new or worsening headache, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, and/or a new neurological deficit such as weakness or numbness, consistent with deep brain stroke. Symptoms of an epidural abscess, an infection at the epidural injection site, may also include new or worsening pain.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in this outbreak, symptoms typically have appeared one to four weeks following injection, but longer, and shorter periods between injection and onset of symptoms have been reported. Therefore, patients and physicians need to closely watch for symptoms for at least several months following the injection.

"MDCH staff will continue to work closely with the facilities involved in the investigation, including St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, to ensure that patient safety and their overall health and wellness remains the primary focus of our efforts," said Haveman.

In the beginning of October, MDCH was made aware of four facilities in Michigan that received contaminated steroid injections from NECC. The product was recalled and patients who received the injection were notified. Any individual who received a steroid injection at one of the four Michigan facilities and is experiencing the symptoms described above should immediately contact their physician or seek medical attention.

There may be some adjustment to this, as the CDC has listed 9 deaths in MI, and keeping the count for IN at 5. However, this statement from the MI Dept. of Community Health lists this latest death as out-of-state.

3 deaths from southwestern MI are listed below that they say are not included in the official MI death toll. One was treated in Indiana and counted there, according to the article. (I didn't update the thread title since I'm not sure if the other two are counted yet.)
