DETROIT – A group of infections that has spread through classrooms at two Detroit schools has left one child dead, sent two to the hospital, and made several others sick.

Officials with the Detroit Health Department said the group of infections first spread through multiple classrooms at an elementary school in mid-April.

In one case, a student experienced flu-like symptoms, and initially, that student’s condition seemed to improve, according to officials.

About a week later, the child’s condition deteriorated. The child died on April 26, health officials said. A final medical examiner report is pending.

Another child went to the hospital on April 29 and remains hospitalized...

Detroit Health Department Statement Regarding Apparent Increase in Illness Amongst Elementary Students

MAY 03 2023 DETROIT HEALTH DEPARTMENT The Detroit Health Department is working with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to assess an apparent increase in illnesses amongst students at Marcus Garvey Academy located in Detroit.

After receiving reports of symptomatic students at Garvey, the Detroit Health Department responded by sending a team to the location to assist DPSCD leadership with evaluation, monitoring review of protocols for deep cleaning and disinfecting. In collaboration with the Department of Health, DPSCD has informed parents/caregivers of students that Garvey will be closed until Monday to allow for deep cleaning.

The Detroit Health Department is working closely with DPSCD, and MDHHS to monitor and trace all reported illnesses among students at that location. We do not yet have confirmation on the cause of the illness, and will share that information with Detroiters once that information has been confirmed.

Parents/caregivers of children ages 4-7 should monitor their children for symptoms and seek medical care promptly if their child experiences the following symptoms:

• Fever
• Headache
• Lethargy
• Nausea/vomiting
• Abdominal pain

The Detroit Health Department offers vaccinations to children and adults to protect against many childhood diseases. Vaccinations are also available at pediatric centers and primary care providers.

Focus: HOPE says illness identified as hand, foot, and mouth disease

DETROIT – A Detroit daycare has identified the illness that spread to 17 children this week and caused the center to close.

Officials with the Detroit Health Department revealed Wednesday, May 3, that they are monitoring about 25 cases of a “mystery” illness between the Focus: HOPE Center for Children and Marcus Garvey Academy.

A student from the academy died from his sickness, and a 3-year-old girl from the Center for Children spent two days in the hospital.

On Thursday morning, Focus: HOPE revealed the 17 cases at the daycare have been identified as hand, foot, and mouth disease.

Detroit school closed due to high levels of flu-like symptoms reports two cases of bacterial illness

After a spate of student illnesses prompted the temporary closure of a Detroit school, the district says two students were diagnosed with the bacterial illness Haemophilus influenzae.

Two students at Marcus Garvey Academy were diagnosed with H. flu, Chrystal Wilson, assistant superintendent of communications with the Detroit Public Schools Community District, said Friday.
Last year, the number of brain abscesses in children in and around Las Vegas, Nevada, rose from the expected four or five to 17.

The pre-K through eighth-grade school closed this week after "a number of students" in the lower grades became ill. Wilson said that fewer than 25 of the school's 310 students were sick.

The school will reopen Monday, she said.

Earlier this week, she said, the school “experienced an unusually high rate of flu-like symptoms including student fevers, and vomiting, namely at the early grade levels.”

The closure also followed the death last week of a kindergartener who attended Marcus Garvey Academy, the school district said in a statement.

The student's cause of death is pending, the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said Friday.

“The student came to school with flu-like symptoms,” Wilson said.

Haemophilus influenzae, or H. flu, is a disease caused by bacteria that can lead to illnesses such as ear infections and bronchitis or more serious bloodstream infections, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. It is not the same as illness caused by influenza viruses.

“These bacteria live in people's nose and throat, and usually cause no harm. However, the bacteria can sometimes move to other parts of the body and cause infection,” the CDC says.
