January 20, 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Faculty of Central Lake Public Schools,
We are all deeply saddened at the loss of one of our elementary school students today. Please keep the Hurst family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Tomorrow, Central Lake Schools will have available our counselor and school social worker, as well as four additional grief counselors from the Char-Em ISD on site to assist students and staff who are grieving the loss of their classmate and friend.
This evening, I talked with the Medical Director of the Health Department, Dr. Josh Meyerson, and he has assured me that our current cleaning regimen ensures that our facilities are as clean and safe as possible. As we do each weekend, this afternoon our custodial team thoroughly cleaned and sanitized the entire elementary school in preparation for school Monday morning.
Although there are speculations, no cause of death has been determined as of Sunday evening. We have been in constant contact with officials from the Health Department of Northwest Michigan and will continue to seek their advice moving forward. Dr. Meyerson has advised that students and staff remember to practice prudent hand washing techniques and cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze.
This is a difficult time and we urge parents to listen to, talk with, and support their children throughout their grieving process. If I can be of assistance, or if you have any questions please contact me at 231.544.3141.
Sincerely,
Ben Williams
Superintendent, Central Lake Public Schools
