Compared to this time last year, the number of whooping cough or pertussis cases has increased by 45%.

The state has already seen nearly 550 cases, and it's just August..

The number of whooping cough cases are on the rise in Northern Michigan.

Dr. Robert Graham, medical director for Central Michigan District Health Department, District Health Department #10, and Mid Michigan District Health Department says there's been 10 cases in Wexford, Missaukee, Crawford, and Arenac counties in the last week.

"Usually, we might see one or two cases a month in all my counties but to have this many cases is really unusual,"says Dr. Graham...

Bay County sees rise in whooping cough cases

Health officials in Bay County and across the state of Michigan are seeing an increase in cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, including severe illness in young children...

...Since the beginning of 2014, 14 cases of pertussis have been identified in Bay County, as compared to the two cases reported last year during the same time, according to Bay County Health Officer Joel Strasz. No deaths have been reported in Bay County.

In Midland County, about 10 cases had been seen by the end of August, according to David Mulder, a physician assistant in a Family Practice Center at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland, who wrote a column in the Daily News to encourage immunization...

TRAVERSE CITY ? Grand Traverse County health officials are urging all students and staff at Grand Traverse Academy to get a prophylactic antibiotic to prevent a whooping cough outbreak at the school from spreading.

Health officials are investigating cases of Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, that span several grades and multiple classrooms at the school. There are six confirmed cases,12 others are being tested and additional symptomatic students are being evaluated...

Whooping cough cases continue to climb

GRAND TRAVERSE CO -- The number of students and staff that are becoming ill continues to increase due to the Pertussis outbreak at Grand Traverse Academy.

According to the Grand Traverse Health Department, there are now 12 confirmed and 161 probable cases of the whooping cough as of Wednesday.

The Health Department first reported on Nov. 8 of nine confirmed and 57 probable cases. Those numbers went up on Nov. 10 to 10 confirmed and 83 probable cases. The increase in cases caused the Grand Traverse Academy to close their doors until Monday Nov. 17...

Physicians urge whooping cough vaccination, cases continue to increase

TRAVERSE CITY ? Physicians are urging children and adults to get up-to-date vaccinations in the wake of a growing whooping cough outbreak rooted in a local charter school, but not all parents want to immunize their children for reasons medical or otherwise.

By Friday, Grand Traverse County health officials confirmed 15 confirmed local cases of Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, and said another 167 local illnesses likely are Pertussis.

Two of the confirmed cases are infants, said Mike Lahey, the county health department's emergency preparedness coordinator, and 10 were not vaccinated or were not up-to-date on their Pertussis vaccine...

22 Cases Confirmed in Whooping Cough Outbreak

We begin right now with an update on the whooping cough outbreak in the Grand Traverse area.

The Grand Traverse County Health Department has now confirmed at least 22 cases of Pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

Half of those cases are linked to Grand Traverse Academy. There are still about 167 probable cases related to the school and 14 possible cases that are not linked to the Academy...

TRAVERSE CITY ? Whooping cough has spread into 12 area schools in five districts.

The Children's House, a local independent Montessori school, confirmed its first case of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, during the weekend. Elk Rapids Schools confirmed its first case, a high school student, Monday.

Missy Russell, director of advancement for The Children's House, said the infected student is up-to-date on her immunizations and has a "very mild case." She's enrolled in the school's preschool program...

HAMILTON, Mich. (WOOD) ? Allegan County?s medical director says an outbreak of whooping cough among teens may be caused by a less effective vaccine that went into use in the early 1990s.

...Allegan County?s medical director, Dr. Richard Tooker, told 24 Hour News 8 he thinks this year may go down in history as the county?s worst ever for whooping cough.

?I?ve been in public health since 1984 and I have never seen anything like this,? Tooker said.allegan county pertusis cases 2011-2014

There were four cases of whooping cough in Allegan County in 2011. Tooker said that was typical. In 2012, there were 27 cases. There were 25 case in 2013.

There have already been 26 cases this year. 21 of those have happened since August. Most have affected Hamilton High School students, but there have also been cases reported involving middle school students...
