Health Dept. warns of probable measles case

CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) ? The Calhoun County Public Health Department is warning parents of a probable case of measles in the county.

The department says that the child is less than one year old and had recently traveled outside of the country. Because of the child's age it had not yet received the two recommended measles/mump/rubella vaccine.

The health department is investigating if there are any individuals that are at risk of contracting measles because of exposure to the child. They say that exposure may have occurred on Tuesday, April 30th at a Battle Creek area pediatric office or at a Kalamazoo area emergency room. The specific facilities have not been identified by the health department...

KALAMAZOO, MI ? A Battle Creek-area baby with measles is recuperating without incident. But the 8-month old triggered a search for more than 100 people in 15 states who could have been exposed to the disease when the contagious baby traveled on an international flight, health officials say.

Kalamazoo County health officials tracked down about 30 patients from a hospital emergency room in Kalamazoo that the child visited April 30.

Calhoun County officials did likewise with patients possibly exposed in a Battle Creek pediatric office that saw the child April 29.

In Calhoun County, 48 households were notified of exposure, including two pregnant women who were exposed, one with a history of measles and one who did not know her immunization status. The vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women.

It fell to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, though, to find 53 passengers from 15 states who may have been exposed to measles on the international flight the baby was on that came into Chicago two days earlier, when the child was likely contagious...
