Medical director says Ganiard outbreak followed typical norovirus pattern

Earlier this week Mt. Pleasant School district canceled all of its classes because of a viral outbreak.

Isabella County Central Michigan District Health Department medical director Dr. Robert Graham believes the outbreak is norovirus and nothing else.

?We are not suspecting (food poisoning) at all. It doesn?t follow the food poisoning pattern,? Graham said. ?(Ganiard Elementary) has a pristine record when it comes to food service. That doesn?t mean there couldn?t be a slipup, but it doesn?t act like a foodborne illness to me.

?The way it was spread it would be hit or miss and the attack rate wouldn?t be so high,? Graham said. ?If just the kids who ate the macaroni got sick then that would alert us to a possible foodborne illness, but we didn?t see that kind of pattern.?

Samples have not yet confirmed what the virus is because they are still being collected. Once stool samples are collected they will be sent to a lab in Lansing and tested.
