More chicken pox cases being reported in the area

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says seven cases of chickenpox have been reported to the health department?s St. Joseph County office this past week.

This follows the seven confirmed Hillsdale County cases in January that were reported by the Michigan Disease Surveillance System.

Most of the cases involved school-age children...

Chicken pox outbreak reaches White Pigeon

COLDWATER ? A second, smaller outbreak of chicken pox has hit another St. Joseph County school ? this time in White Pigeon.

?We have three confirmed cases, but we have a lot of kids there who are not up-to-date? on vaccinations who are facing a 21-day exclusion, according to Kim Wilhelm, prevention services director for the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency.

At White Pigeon Elementary School, many of the children who did not have valid immunization records ?had gone to Indiana for the shots.?...

Significant increase in chicken pox cases in Michigan, health officials urge vaccination

(WXYZ) - Ever since a vaccine was introduced two decades ago, chicken pox cases have dropped substantially.

But, state health officials have seen a significant increase in chicken pox cases this year.

Dr. Christina Chen of Beaumont Children's Hospital said, "Why endure that or why put a child at risk for getting something that is 100% preventable."

Pediatricians are reminding parents to get their child up to date on their chicken pox vaccine.

The state health department released a report for 2016 through April that reports 239 cases of chicken pox.

That's a 57% increase compared to last year.

In most of the cases, the patients had not been vaccinated...

BAY CITY, MI ? The Bay County Health Department has confirmed two cases of chickenpox at Bay City Central High School and is working to ensure the virus doesn't spread.

The agency is working with the school, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and parents of students at the school who have been reported as not vaccinated, under-vaccinated, or are at risk of contracting the virus. In some cases, exclusion from school is warranted, depending on the immunity level of the student...
