Health authorities confirm active circulation of AH1N1 virus; amounts to six deaths in 2025...Last week, the influenza virus added new cases of infection in the Yucatan peninsula, it was confirmed by health authorities, who reported the presence of 42 new cases in a week, a figure not recorded since the beginning of the year.

According to the latest published version of the Epidemiological Surveillance Report elaborated by the Federal Government Health Secretariat, the three states in the region reported new active cases. Between September 15 and 22, Yucatan recorded 34 new cases, followed by Campeche with 5 and Quintana Roo with 3 new cases during this same period.

In these 45 cases, patients attended medical consultation after presenting symptoms associated with respiratory infections and it was through the specialized diagnostic tests that confirmed the presence of the influenza virus.

These diagnoses have been confirmed by rapid tests or PCR genetic analyses, which identified the AH1N1 variant as the most widely circulated in the region, besides that because of its characteristics, this variant usually presents a more prolonged and complication infection picture in groups more vulnerable to the virus.

Influenza with active circulation in the peninsula

According to the epidemiological report update, Yucatán is the entity on the peninsula that leads in number of infections accumulated during the year. From Jan. 1 to Sept. 22 a total of 122 patients tested positive for the virus.

These figures are followed by Campeche that, during the same period, 77 cases of influenza were confirmed, while Quintana Roo reported 44 cases, for a total of 243 people infected with influenza in the region.

It is worth recalling that in late 2024 and early this year, influenza contagions gathered force in the Yucatan Peninsula due to low temperatures recorded during the winter season, peaking at up to 23 new cases in a single week.

However, with the passing of the weeks, the incidence began to decrease, until now, when again a slight rebound is observed in the weekly records of the Yucatan peninsula.

A virus with degree of lethality

The presence of the virus has left its mark on the Yucatan peninsula by claiming the lives of six people a year. The health report mentions that these patients required to be hospitalized due to the complications they presented during the infectious picture of influenza, but despite medical efforts they lost their lives.

Due to the characteristics of major circulating variants in the region such as AH1N1, which is of slow evolution, this prolongs the recovery process in patients. This can cause an accelerated deterioration in the health status of patients with degenerative diseases or a history of respiratory infections such as covid-19, which increases the likelihood of developing sequelae or other types of complications.

This year, Quintana Roo recorded three deaths from the virus, followed by Campeche with two deaths and Yucatan, which has so far confirmed only one death.

It is worth mentioning that, in 2024, the Yucatan peninsula closed with only one confirmed influenza death, making Yucatan the only entity to record deaths due to this disease.
