Immediate action and inter-institutional coordination in the GBG case in Tamaulipas
SRU-188-2025
December 31, 2025
Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.- The Secretariat of Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Government of the State of Tamaulipas informs the livestock community, the productive sectors and the public that the first positive case of Cattle Screwworm (GBG) has been confirmed in the state territory, and the corresponding health protocols have been immediately activated for its care and control.
The head of the state agency, Antonio Varela Flores, announced that
the discovery was made in the Emiliano Zapata ejido, in the municipality of Llera de Canales, in a six-day-old calf. According to preliminary investigations, this is an isolated case and not native to the area, as there is no evidence of the presence of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly, the vector responsible for this pest, in the official trapping network.
Under the principle of maximum sanitary precaution, an inter-institutional response protocol was immediately activated, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER); the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA); the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and other Exotic Animal Diseases (CPA); the Tamaulipas Regional Livestock Union (UGRT); the State Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Livestock in Tamaulipas (CFPPT); as well as the municipality of Llera.
With the aim of safeguarding the state's health status, a Strategic Sanitary Cordon was implemented, based on four lines of action: Zoning and movement control: A Focal Area was delimited with a radius of 20 kilometers from the point of detection, as well as a Perifocal Area or buffer zone extending up to 40 kilometers. In both zones, the movement of livestock is restricted without prior official inspection.
Epidemiological surveillance and sanitary sweep: Official brigades carry out an intensive sanitary sweep, property by property and house by house, with exhaustive clinical inspections in backyard species and large livestock for the timely detection of myiasis or lesions compatible with the vector.
Prophylaxis and metaphylactic treatment: Mass administration of 1% ivermectin was initiated to 100% of the bovine population of the affected herd and adjacent properties, with the aim of interrupting the biological cycle of the parasite and reducing the susceptibility of the cattle.
Intensive entomological monitoring: The installation of vane-type traps was increased at strategic points in the focal and perifocal zones. Georeferencing and continuous analysis of this data will allow for real-time evaluation of vector activity and the effectiveness of the implemented measures.
The Government of the State of Tamaulipas, led by Américo Villarreal Anaya, reaffirms its commitment to animal health, biosecurity, and the protection of the productive assets of livestock farmers. It also urges the livestock sector to immediately report any suspected cases of screwworm infestation or lesions to the appropriate health authorities, in order to act promptly and prevent the spread of this pest.

Tamaulipas registers first case of the parasite known as screwworm
ByTELEMUNDO 40 • Published on January 1, 2026 • Updated at 11:59 am on January 1, 2026
A case of screwworm was reported on December 27 in a six-day-old calf in Tamaulipas,
197 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, the first such case in that state.
According to Sid Miller, Texas agriculture commissioner, the case was identified on December 27 by Mexico's National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA).
“The continued detections of screwworm near the Texas border are a stark reminder of the serious threat this pest poses to our state. Thanks to the efforts of USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and APHIS, working in coordination with Mexico, its northward spread has been halted, and this recent case appears to be an isolated incident, for now,” Miller said in a statement.
The screwworm is a small, flesh-eating parasite that lives in the muscles of mammals, which can die if left untreated. Although it can rarely affect humans, the flies that spread it more commonly prefer livestock.
The fly lays its eggs in open wounds, on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or rectum, Dr. Iván Meléndez explained in a previous interview. Furthermore, removing the parasite from the muscle is very difficult, and the only treatment is mechanical extraction, the expert added.

The animal was attended to immediately and reported to the authorities, so that the intervention would be timely.
“When we responded to the report, the injury had already been treated and the larvae were dead. Even so, the corresponding sampling was carried out, confirming that they were larvae of the fly that causes screwworm infestation,” Amaya added.

Rapid and timely treatment to control screwworm infestation in the State of Mexico
We maintain inspections at strategic points
National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality | January 2, 2026
Senasica and authorities of the State of Mexico immediately controlled a case of screwworm in cattle in Tlatlaya, applying preventive treatment to 20 unaffected animals
Senasica confirmed the detection of a case of cattle screwworm (GBG) in the State of Mexico, which was addressed immediately and preventive treatment was given to the 20 animals on the ranch, none of which were affected by the plague.
The case was identified in a goat in the municipality of Tlatlaya, located in the southern region of the state. The animal had a wound that had not received proper medical attention, which became the point of infestation for the larva. Following confirmation of the case, the state government declared a preventative phase.
The rapid response of Senasica, in coordination with the authorities of the Government of the State of Mexico and the collaboration of the producers, allowed the immediate control of the case, preventing its spread in the area.
To deactivate the case, Senasica immediately deployed specialized technical personnel to strengthen surveillance in the area and carry out the following actions:
- Active search for suspected cases in coordination with the Government of the State of Mexico.
- Offer informational talks and training to local livestock farmers, for the application of preventive measures.
- Dissemination to promote timely case reporting
- Installation of new traps at strategic points around the detection area.
- Inspections are being maintained at strategic points.
- The Ministry of Agriculture reiterates its call to producers and the general public to maintain constant vigilance and immediately report any suspicious injuries in animals, thus ensuring the preservation of the country's animal health status and the protection of the national livestock heritage.
