After the discovery of a sea lion, a dolphin, a seal, several pelicans and hundreds of lifeless mollusks in the sand on Santa Mónica beach, between Tijuana and Rosarito, authorities are investigating whether the cause of death is the result of a bacterium.
According to the protocol, once the animals are located, they must report and send photos to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), bury them in the sand, under a meter and a half, said Luis Felipe Figueroa, coordinator of the Zone fund. Federal Maritime Terrestrial (Zofemat) in Playas de Rosarito.

"We had to dig them up so they could do a biopsy and tests, take them to Ensenada, to the UABC (Autonomous University of Baja California), where a biologist is doing analysis, we are waiting for an answer," he said.
This finding occurs along with the high levels of contamination in the sea, due to wastewater, which currently exceeds 200 enterococci per 100 milliliters, which is why the beaches are closed for recreational use.
Margarita Díaz, Border Protection director of Environmental Education, said that sea lions and dead birds also constantly appear on the beaches of Tijuana.
She denounced the opacity and lack of transparency of the authorities in charge of investigating the cause of her death, when she was questioned if this was related to the high levels of contamination of the sea.
“From my point of view and I have been on the beach for years, it is not constant that animals come out, but at least two or three little animals come out a week and this is due to poachers who are in that area and get entangled in the nets” said Felipe Figueroa.
The animals were in a state of decomposition, with the exception of the dolphin, and all were found in an area of high tide and difficult to access, indicated the Zofemat coordinator.
