Mexico Bans Imports from Michigan

VIA BABELFISH:
The Mexican Government prohibits the import of commercial poultry products from Michigan...
Mexico prohibited the bird-raising product import of Michigan, in the United States, after the possible presence of bird influenza in wild birds of that state, informed Tuesday the Secretariat into Agriculture. The dependency informed in an official notice that the prohibition will be effective until the Department of Agriculture of the United States demonstrates that "viral circulation in the commercial poultry keeping of the state of Michigan does not exist". Between the products that could not be concerned are meat, canoras pastes, v?sceras, birds and of ornato, in addition to eggs. The American authorities informed Monday that discovered the possible presence of bird influenza in wild swans that grow up in the margins of the Erie lake, in Michigan, but apparently the stock is not dangerous. Routine examinations in two swans in the lake of Michigan indicated that they could be infected with virus H5N1. Still other tests in order to confirm if are required they really contracted the disease. Nevertheless, other investigations have discarded that are the variety of bird influenza that has forced to sacrifice million birds in Asia and has killed at least to 138 people world-wide level, announced Monday the Department of Agriculture.

This reaction by the Mexican government is an over-reaction to finding 2 swans with H5N1 in Michigan.

We will see these kinds of political reactions to the H5N1 saga.

This is why it is very important to report the news properly and not promote rumors. The economic costs can be huge.

In every country poultry is an important and cheap source of protein.

Starvation is a possible "collateral damage" of a pandemic. Efforts must be made to protect this source by culling and re-population.

Are they banning just live poultry and eggs? What about pre-cooked...isn't it safe to eat?

I saw something about S. Korea banning as well.

Re: Mexico Bans Imports from Michigan

South Korea suspended all U.S. poultry imports the Korea Daily says. I do not have the link.

Here we go. Bird flu used for political and economic returns.

Re: Mexico Bans Imports from Michigan

Could illegal aliens pose a risk and have brought this and other bugs into the US and Michigan?

Re: Mexico Bans Imports from Michigan

No, illegal aliens did not bring H5N1 into the United States, but I think you know that. All humans carry "bugs'.

The issue of illegal aliens is political and not discussed here.

Re: Mexico Bans Imports from Michigan

Smuggling has allowed the continued spread of different virus types and has continued to be a problem between China and Southeast Asia and else where around the world.

Just a thought

If we can't control the worlds borders legally then it can and does and will slip thru.

Quarantines seek to impose the same geographical controls for the same reason.

But I understand your response and point taken. Thanks.
