Mexico registered another death from measles, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in the country to 36, according to the daily outbreak report as of March 31, 2026.

This death comes amid sustained transmission, with 14,986 confirmed cases, representing an increase of 505 infections since the previous count of 14,481 reported on March 25.

The 36 deaths are distributed across 10 states. Chihuahua has the highest number of deaths with 21, followed by Jalisco with five, while Sonora, Durango, Michoacán, Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Chiapas, Guerrero, and Sinaloa each have one death.

During the same period, probable cases reached 36,733, while those ruled out totaled 16,595, and cases under investigation decreased to 5,152.

Measles by State

The virus remains present in all 32 states and has spread to 458 municipalities.

Based on the 14,986 confirmed cases and 36 deaths, the national case fatality rate is 0.24 percent.

The breakdown by state confirms the concentration of the outbreak in a few states. Jalisco leads with 5,617 accumulated confirmed cases, followed by Chihuahua with 4,552.

In a second group are Chiapas with 961 cases, Mexico City with 724, Michoacán with 402, Guerrero with 357, and Sinaloa with 353.

Other states have intermediate numbers: Sonora with 332 cases; the State of Mexico with 283; Durango with 230; and Puebla with 210.

At lower levels, but with active transmission, are Quintana Roo with 141 cases; Colima with 121; Tabasco with 92; Coahuila with 72; and Querétaro with 52.

The remaining states report figures below 50 confirmed cases, reflecting a national spread, but with varying intensity. arrow-circle-right We recommend

At the state level, the case fatality rate shows significant contrasts. Chihuahua registers a rate close to 0.46 percent, while Jalisco remains at 0.06 percent, despite being the epicenter.

Among the highest rates are Tlaxcala, with 2.22 percent; Guerrero, with 1.04 percent; Chiapas, with 0.64 percent; and Durango, with 0.53 percent. Mexico City has a case fatality rate of 0.15 percent.

These contrasts reflect differences in the severity of cases, timely access to health services, and the conditions of medical care.

Jalisco, main transmission hotspot

The behavior of the outbreak confirms that Jalisco continues to be the main transmission hotspot in 2026, while Chihuahua maintains the highest historical burden of deaths.

By age group, children aged one to four years account for the highest number of cases, with 1,946 registered, followed by the 25-to-29 age group with 1,768, and the five-to-nine age group with 1,722.

The highest incidence rate is in children under one year old, with 72.84 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The distribution by sex remains stable: 51.2 percent in males and 48.8 percent in females.

The sustained increase in infections, their wide geographic spread, and the continued deaths confirm that the measles outbreak in Mexico remains active, with ongoing transmission throughout the country.

Mexico faces a sharp resurgence of measles: infections increase 272% in one year
Mexico has accumulated 12,154 cases of measles and 17 deaths in 2026. Jalisco accounts for 54% of infections while specialists analyze the impact of the World Cup.
Regina Orozco · 6 hours ago

Mexico is facing one of the largest measles outbreaks in recent years. As of July 10, 2026, the country has accumulated 12,154 confirmed cases and 17 deaths, figures that represent an increase of 272.7% compared to the same period in 2025, when 3,261 infections and nine deaths had been recorded, according to the Daily Measles Outbreak Report from the Ministry of Health.

The increase is occurring in a particular context: the celebration of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which attracted thousands of national and international visitors to various Mexican venues, especially Jalisco, the state that currently has the highest number of infections in the country.

Although health authorities are maintaining constant monitoring, specialists warn that it is still too early to establish a direct link between the World Cup matches and a potential increase in infections.

Jalisco, the main epicenter of the outbreak

During 2026, Jalisco became the state with the highest transmission of measles, surpassing Chihuahua, where the national outbreak began in February 2025.

As of July 10, the state reported 6,580 confirmed cases, equivalent to 54% of the national total, in addition to an incidence rate of 73.26 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and three deaths.

Far behind are:

Mexico City: 1,004 cases.

Chiapas: 845 cases.

The concentration of infections in Jalisco is especially significant because it hosted four World Cup matches, in addition to receiving thousands of fans from various countries, including South Korea, Colombia, Uruguay, and Spain.
Experts urge caution before linking the World Cup to new infections.

Mauricio Rodríguez, Professor of Microbiology at the UNAM Faculty of Medicine and spokesperson for the University Program for Research on Epidemiological and Emerging Risks, explained that there is still insufficient evidence to conclude that the mass gatherings related to the World Cup have caused new chains of transmission.

The specialist indicated that epidemiological surveillance will be conducted in the coming weeks to identify any infections associated with the national and international travel during the sporting event.

Experts remind us that the incubation period for measles can vary between seven and 21 days, so any increase related to mass gatherings could be reflected later in official reports. The outbreak has spread throughout the country.

The spread of measles in recent months reflects a significant expansion.

While as of July 10, 2025, cases were distributed across 20 states and 79 municipalities, currently all 32 states have reported infections, with cases now present in 502 municipalities.

This trend demonstrates greater circulation of the virus across virtually the entire country, which has necessitated strengthening epidemiological surveillance and vaccination efforts.
Vaccination campaign continues.

In response to the increase in cases, the Ministry of Health has maintained an intensive vaccination campaign since February, primarily targeting:

Children.
People under 49 years of age who have not completed their vaccination schedule.

People who do not know if they have been immunized.

Authorities reiterate that the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine remains the most effective tool for preventing complications and reducing community transmission. Fatality Rate Decreases Despite Increased Cases

Although the number of infections nearly quadrupled compared to the previous year, the fatality rate showed a reduction.

In 2025, it stood at 0.28%, while during the same period in 2026, it dropped to 0.14%.

Experts believe this trend may be related to earlier detection of cases, higher vaccination coverage, and faster access to health services. However, they emphasize that measles remains a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications, especially in children and people with compromised immune systems.
Epidemiological Surveillance Will Continue in the Coming Weeks

Health authorities will continue to evaluate the evolution of the outbreak to determine if the intense mobility observed during the World Cup had any impact on virus transmission.

Meanwhile, experts recommend checking vaccination records and visiting health centers if symptoms consistent with measles appear.

Mexico Faces Severe Measles Surge as Reported Cases Double
August 9, 2026

Mexico is confronting a mounting public health challenge as measles infections continue to spread nationwide. Recent data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reveals that the country recorded 12,255 confirmed cases between January and July 2026 alone. This figure more than doubles the total infections documented throughout the entirety of 2025, underlining a rapid acceleration in community transmission and a heightened level of risk across multiple regions.

Alongside the sharp rise in contagion, health authorities have confirmed 17 fatalities linked directly to the outbreak during this timeframe. The resurgence of the virus has intensified concerns among epidemiologists, who attribute part of the vulnerability to lingering gaps in routine childhood immunization schedules. States with lower vaccine coverage rates have experienced the most significant clusters, prompting federal and state health institutions to sound alarms and evaluate localized containment strategies.,,
