Health Authorities Confirm 130 Measles Cases in Chihuahua
April 3, 2025 | 9:21 PM CST
Updated April 3, 2025 | 9:21 PM CST
Chihuahua Health authorities are maintaining epidemiological surveillance and recommending that the population get vaccinated against measles.

The Chihuahua Health Secretariat confirmed the first case of measles in Ciudad Juárez, bringing the total to 130 positive cases across the state, all imported from the United States.

The new case, according to health authorities, is that of an infected girl. The girl had contact with at least 300 people, and therefore a health cordon was activated to identify further infections of the disease, which has already spread to 11 of the state's 67 municipalities.

Rogelio Covarrubias, director of the health jurisdiction in Ciudad Juárez, spoke about the situation:

This is the case of a one-year-and-eleven-month-old girl who was diagnosed on March 23rd. After an exhaustive study, it was determined that the child had approximately 250 or 300 contacts.

Furthermore, the head of the health jurisdiction in Ciudad Juárez reviewed the infections in the state and noted that "we currently have 130 cases, 130 cases in different locations."

Authorities urge the population to get vaccinated against measles.

HERMOSILLO, SONORA. APRIL 3, 2025.- The positive measles case in Sonora is stable, recovering, and contact investigations continue to rule out contagion, reported Universo Ortiz Arballo, Director of Epidemiology in Sonora.

Fortunately, the confirmed case did not require hospitalization, has had no complications, and is at home.

“Regarding the vaccination campaign, we don't have specific data because we're still in the identification process, but actions are being taken, and the Ministry of Health is working with all health institutions. "Staff from the Santa Ana Jurisdiction, the Regular Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Isssteson, and ISSSTE are working in coordination on this fence; it's a joint effort," he emphasized.

Ortiz Arballo mentioned that the staff is identifying all the people the patient lived with in the last 8 days, to monitor them for 21 days, which is the incubation period for the virus, but they have not found any new suspected cases.

If you are traveling to high-risk areas like the US, get vaccinated against measles, a doctor recommends.

If you are traveling to high-risk areas like the US, get vaccinated against measles, a doctor recommends.

People traveling to high-risk areas who do not know whether they have been vaccinated or not, or who are over 35 years of age, are advised to go to health institutions to receive the vaccine.

Currently, he said, there is sufficient supply of the vaccine to cover the demand, so it is ideal for anyone traveling to Texas or other high-risk areas to get vaccinated. with cases go to any health sector unit, regardless of your entitlement status.

Mexico registers 126 measles cases and vaccination efforts are intensified
by ME Editorial Staff
April 6, 2025

Mexico. – The federal Ministry of Health reported 126 confirmed cases of measles in Mexico, an increase of 66 cases in the last week, bringing the total from 60 previously. One new case was registered in Sonora, while Chihuahua increased from 56 to 121 cases, and Oaxaca maintains four notifications. In addition, 252 cases are under investigation.

The Epidemiology Directorate highlighted that almost half of those affected are children between 5 and 14 years old, and that 119 of the 126 cases had not been vaccinated against measles. At the regional level, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that measles increased 5.5-fold in the Americas in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with a total of 888 cases in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Brazil.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious complications such as diarrhea, ear infections, blindness, pneumonia, and encephalitis. Symptoms include fever, conjunctivitis, cough, and skin discoloration.

Given this increase, the National Center for Child and Adolescent Health (CENSIA) recommended intensifying immunizations for children between 1 and 9 years old and for young adults, especially in high-risk areas, such as border areas and municipalities with a high influx of tourists or migrant populations.

Ministry of Health reports 48 deaths from whooping cough in Mexico; total measles cases 583
The disease is experiencing a global upsurge, says the head of the department, David Kershenobich; epidemiological surveillance efforts have been intensified, he asserts.
By Andrés García S.

Secretary of Health David Kershenobich warned of an increase in measles cases in Mexico during 2025, amid a global resurgence of this infectious disease. Presenting the epidemiological outlook, he noted that as of week 16 of this year, 2,019 probable cases of measles-rubella have been reported, of which 583 have already been confirmed. This figure represents a significant increase compared to 2024, when only seven confirmed cases were recorded throughout the year.

Kershenobich explained that confirmed cases in 2025 are concentrated primarily in Chihuahua, with 560 patients, followed by states such as Sonora, Durango, and Oaxaca, among others. “Measles is currently spreading to different countries worldwide,” he emphasized, putting Mexico at risk of the virus being imported and spread.

The official explained that the Ministry of Health has intensified epidemiological surveillance efforts and is actively searching for cases in the states. Of the 2,019 reports received this year, 964 have already been ruled out, while 472 remain under investigation. “What is important is to monitor notifications in all states,” Kershenobich emphasized, referring to the coordinated effort between local and federal authorities.

The increase in cases also highlights the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage, as most infections in previous years were related to imported cases or transmission chains linked to travelers.
Whooping Cough, Week 16

Regarding whooping cough, the Health Minister reported that as of week 16 of 2025, 809 cases of whooping cough have been recorded in the country, with a higher concentration in Mexico City, Nuevo León, and some cases in Chihuahua. The disease has claimed the lives of 48 children under one year of age.

Kershenobich explained that the deaths are mainly due to bronchial spasms caused by the intense coughing attacks characteristic of the disease. Since the first dose of the whooping cough vaccine is administered at one year of age, infants under that age do not have direct protection.

Therefore, the Secretary of Health urged all pregnant women to get vaccinated starting at week 20 of pregnancy, regardless of whether they have been previously vaccinated. This strategy allows antibodies to be transferred to the baby and protect it during the first months of life. The call is reinforced within the framework of National Vaccination Week 2025, a campaign that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of immunization. Authorities emphasized that this event does not limit access to vaccination to a single week, but should be considered a starting point for ongoing prevention actions.

Chihuahua surpasses 700 measles cases but with a high recovery rate
admin May 1, 2025 Chihuahua surpasses 700 measles cases but with a high recovery rate2025-05-01T11:09:25-06:00

Chihuahua is facing a measles outbreak with 25 confirmed cases, mainly in Mennonite communities. The Ministry of Health is implementing an epidemiological fence.
Health reports 70% recovery of measles cases in Chihuahua

News from Chihuahua

State Health Secretary Gilberto Baeza reported that although Chihuahua has surpassed 700 measles cases so far this year, more than 500 people have already recovered successfully, reflecting an effective response from the vaccination strategy implemented in the state.

During the current National Vaccination Week, multiple vaccines have been administered not only against measles, but also against other diseases such as whooping cough and rubella, with the goal of strengthening public health and preventing epidemic outbreaks.

The Secretary of Health is expected to visit the state capital this Friday to hold the symbolic closing ceremony of the vaccination week, an event that highlights the collaboration between the state and federal governments. This partnership has already allowed for 50% progress in the annual vaccination program, surpassing the pace of previous campaigns.

In Chihuahua, significant coverage has been achieved among children under 9 years of age, thanks to the installation of vaccination centers in hospitals, health centers, and strategic locations such as shopping malls, facilitating access to vaccines for the population.

Health authorities urge citizens to stay informed about the vaccination schedules for each age group, check their records, and not be alarmed by the cumulative number of cases, as the vast majority of patients have presented mild symptoms that allow recovery at home.

So far, only four hospitalizations and one death have been recorded. However, authorities insist that the situation is under control and does not represent an emergency like the one experienced with COVID-19, emphasizing that vaccines have been key to avoiding major complications.

Mexico reports 4 deaths and more than 1,600 cases of measles in 2025

The Mexican Ministry of Health reported this Thursday a total of 1,629 confirmed cases of measles so far this year, as well as four deaths related to the outbreak, three of them in children who had not been vaccinated.

The deaths occurred in states bordering the United States, where the current wave of infections is originating.

In Chihuahua, a seven-year-old boy and an eleven-month-old baby belonged to the Mennonite community, which often refuses vaccination. The third death in that state also occurred in a child.

In Sonora, a one-year-old baby died after presenting severe malnutrition and not having received the measles vaccine.

The first case of the outbreak in Mexico was reported on April 11 in Chihuahua, in a 31-year-old man who was also unvaccinated.

Since then, the disease has spread to 17 of the country's 32 states, concentrated primarily in Chihuahua, which has a total of 1,537 cases, followed by Sonora (30), Zacatecas (13), Tamaulipas (9), Coahuila (8), Durango (7), and Campeche (6).

The most recent report, as of May 21, indicates that 47 new infections were confirmed in just 24 hours.

Regarding the most affected groups, children aged 0 to 4 years have the highest incidence rate, with 3.41 cases per 100,000 children.

Young adults between 25 and 34 years of age also stand out, with rates above 2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in those age groups.

This outbreak is occurring alongside a surge in cases in the United States, where more than 1,000 infections and three deaths have already been recorded so far this year.

Mexican health authorities insist on the urgency of completing vaccination schedules, especially for minors, to contain the spread of the virus.

How many active measles cases are there in Mexico?
This disease has seen an upsurge among the unvaccinated population.
By Mariana L. Martínez
October 15, 2025, 8:31 p.m. EST

In epidemiological week 40 of 2025, Mexico's National Epidemiological Surveillance System released an overview of the country's health situation, with data reflecting the persistence of endemic diseases, the emergence of isolated outbreaks, and the burden of chronic pathologies.

According to this report, as of week 40, 4,849 confirmed cases of measles were reported, with 22 deaths associated with complications, mainly in Chihuahua and Sonora.

A relevant fact is that "no patient had a vaccination history," highlighting the gaps in immunization coverage and the vulnerability of certain population groups.

In addition, chickenpox, another preventable disease, accumulated 40,937 cases in the year, while whooping cough and meningococcal meningitis also showed active circulation in several states...

Jalisco adds 122 measles cases, ranking second nationwide
Jalisco ranks second nationwide in measles cases, with 122 confirmed infections in 2025

Mexico.- The state of Jalisco is now second nationwide in measles cases, with 122 confirmed cases as of October 23, 2025. This has already led to the closure of an entire school and the closure of only classrooms in other schools in the state.

The head of the Jalisco Ministry of Health (SSJ), Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, details which municipalities are experiencing these cases, and details that the most affected population are children.

“Arandas has 105 cases, Guadalajara has three cases, Tepatitlán de Morelos has seven cases, San Pedro Tlaquepaque has two cases, Jesús María has four cases, and Zapopan has one case. Cases have been confirmed in patients ranging in age from two months to 55 years, but the most affected group is between five and nine years old. In this case, 26 of the 122 cases correspond to that age group.”

Children and women are the most affected by the outbreak

Furthermore, 52 percent of the cases are women, and of all cases, only 4.9 percent were vaccinated with two doses; the rest had not completed their vaccination schedule.
Health authorities urge people to complete vaccination schedules

Pérez Gómez emphasized that in Jalisco there are enough double and triple viral vaccines for the population up to 49 years of age, so they are calling for children to complete their schedules and adults to be vaccinated more intensively.

Mexico faces historic measles outbreak with more than 5,000 cases; experts warn of low vaccination rates
by ME Editorial Staff
October 24, 2025

Mexico City. – Measles is spreading rapidly in Mexico, where infections already exceed 5,000 cases, according to data from the Ministry of Health. Pediatric infectious disease specialist Miguel Ángel Minero Ibert warned that this virus is the most contagious in the world, as one infected person can infect up to 18 others, which explains the rapid growth of outbreaks in areas with low vaccination coverage.

Chihuahua accounts for the majority of cases, with 4,402 infections and 21 of the 23 deaths recorded nationwide. It is followed by Jalisco (113), Michoacán (105), Sonora (101), and Guerrero (91).

The specialist warned that unvaccinated children, adolescents with incomplete vaccination schedules, and pregnant women are the most vulnerable groups, and noted that the triple viral vaccine (MMR) is the most effective measure to prevent the disease, with two doses providing up to 97% protection.

The Federal Government reactivated mass vaccination campaigns in states with active outbreaks and urged the population to check their vaccination records, see a doctor if symptoms—such as fever, cough, and rash—appear, and maintain home isolation if confirmed infected.

"Isolation and vaccination are key to stopping the chain of transmission," Dr. Minero emphasized.

Measles Now Present Throughout Mexico with Over 7,000 Accumulated Cases
Published by Armando Angulo

Measles has now reached all 32 states of Mexico, with a year-to-date total of 7,131 cases and 24 deaths associated with the disease, despite the strengthened vaccination strategies implemented by federal and state health authorities.

The Federal Ministry of Health (SSA) reported that, although the total number of infections is high, only five percent of cases are considered active.

However, specialists warn of the high risk of transmission. Academics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have stated that measles “is the most contagious disease there is, even surpassing COVID-19.”

Last Saturday, February 17, Puebla—the only state that had not yet registered any cases—confirmed its first infection. With this, the country completed the national map of cases.

A day later, the General Directorate of Epidemiology detailed in its Daily Report on the Measles Outbreak in Mexico that “confirmed measles cases, according to the place of notification, were distributed across 32 states and 252 municipalities.”

The analysis by age group shows that the most affected population is children aged one to four, with 1,089 cases. They are followed by children aged five to nine, with 830 infections, and young adults aged 25 to 29, with 789 cases.

Regarding the territorial distribution, Chihuahua leads the list with 4,495 accumulated cases, followed by Jalisco with 1,020, Chiapas with 430, Michoacán with 261, and Guerrero with 248. In contrast, Puebla and Veracruz each reported only one case, while Tlaxcala, Yucatán, and Nuevo León each reported two infections.

Deaths associated with the outbreak are concentrated primarily in Chihuahua, with 21 fatalities. Jalisco, Sonora, and Durango have registered three deaths combined. Mexico City is also experiencing a recent surge. In a three-day period, 14 new cases were added, rising from 64 on Thursday the 15th to 78 on Sunday the 18th.

During an event organized by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Samantha Gaertner Barnad, Director General of the National Center for Child and Adolescent Health (CENSIA), described the current figures as unprecedented, exceeding 6,700 cases, a level that had not been reached “historically.”

The official also warned that Mexico could lose its World Health Organization (WHO) certification as a measles-free country, since February 1st marks one year of continuous transmission. Canada lost that status in November 2025, and the United States will do so on January 20th.

First Measles Death Confirmed in Mexico in 2026
▲ By Editorial Staff
January 26, 2026

Mexico City – The Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the first measles death in Mexico in 2026, according to the daily report monitoring the disease, as of Friday, January 23.

According to the official report, 987 confirmed cases of measles have been recorded in the country during the month of January. The death associated with this illness occurred in the state of Michoacán.

The document details that Jalisco leads the list of states with the highest number of infections, accumulating 521 cases, followed by Chiapas, with 200, and Sinaloa, with 65. Meanwhile, Mexico City reports 51 cases, while Colima has 34 in the same period.

In response to the increase in infections, the Mexican government reiterated that vaccination is the “primary tool” for preventing the spread of measles, a viral disease that has been experiencing an active outbreak since last year.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health called for a reinforcement of preventive measures, reminding the public that the measles vaccine is “safe, free, and highly effective.”

The federal agency emphasized that the disease remains under constant epidemiological surveillance through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, which allows for the timely detection of cases, their laboratory confirmation, and the identification of circulating genotypes, in compliance with international health commitments.

According to official figures, 25 deaths and 6,430 confirmed cases of measles were reported in the country during 2025.

Given this situation, health authorities activated containment protocols that include the deployment of rapid response teams, active case finding, and the intensification of the national vaccination program.

In response to the current national measles outbreak, the State Government, through the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) and the Jalisco Education Secretariat (SEJ), carried out actions in more than 2,000 schools, including vaccination and cleaning of surfaces with water and chlorine; in addition, more than one million measles vaccines have been administered.

The use of face masks was also mandated for 30 days in basic education schools in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (AMG), and they recommend using them in middle and upper secondary education schools.

Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, head of the SSJ, explained that 2026 has seen an acceleration in the spread of the disease due to multiple factors.

“We believe that the most important contributor to this acceleration in 2026 was the December holidays, the end-of-year festivities, in which we observed a relaxation of the discipline of going to vaccination and, particularly, of all the measures that should be followed against respiratory diseases,” he noted.

The Secretary of Health said that, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, preventive actions against measles have been constant in schools since the beginning of the outbreak.

The mandatory use of face masks in basic education schools applies to Guadalajara, Zapopan, San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, El Salto and Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos.

In schools where a suspected case is registered, an epidemiological investigation is carried out and if the case is confirmed, the group is suspended and the virtual modality is applied for two weeks.

If more than one classroom is affected, as determined by epidemiological surveillance, the entire school takes virtual classes.

Ventilation of school spaces is of utmost importance and goes hand in hand with the cleaning of surfaces, with water and chlorine, carried out by the school's own cleaning staff; the use of face masks reinforces the protection of the health of students.

Currently, in-person activities are suspended in certain groups of 30 schools;

The Secretary of Health specified that only in four cases did the entire school staff migrate to virtual classes for two weeks.

As of February 3, 2026, Mexico has recorded a cumulative total of 8,332 confirmed cases and 26 deaths. In Jalisco, 1,776 cases have been confirmed, placing it second nationally in incidence rate with 12.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Given this situation, in Jalisco, from 2025 to February 3, 2026, more than 1,020,000 doses of measles vaccines have been administered.

The goal set by the SSJ is to achieve a coverage of 350,000 doses per week, in order to break the chain of transmission.

“For us this is very important, Jalisco’s vaccination goal is at least 2 million doses and we have already achieved 50 percent of this goal,” said Pérez Gómez.

Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes, Secretary of Education in the state, pointed out that the education system has demonstrated its ability to contain the spread of viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, and that with discipline and shared responsibility, it will do the same against diseases such as measles.

“We will continue to emphasize to our parents and teachers the importance of vaccination, not only for children, but also for ourselves to ensure we are protected. And if in doubt, the doctor and his team have told us we can get a booster shot. Second, hygiene. The same things that helped us contain COVID-19: washing hands, avoiding sharing food, and avoiding close contact,” he explained.

The Secretary called on mothers, fathers, and guardians not to send their children to school if they have any symptoms, and urged teachers to remain attentive to the health of their students.

“We need to be very vigilant to ensure that the fever doesn't rise to 38 degrees Celsius or higher, and watch for skin rashes, which are the most obvious symptoms, as well as cough, conjunctivitis, and nasal discharge. If the person with this potential infection is suspected, they and those around them should wear face masks. They should try to isolate themselves as much as possible, which is why they need to stay home. We ask parents and guardians to seek medical attention immediately and provide the school with this information,” he added.

Measles is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, rash (exanthem), which usually starts on the head or neck and spreads to the rest of the body.

The disease can lead to serious complications such as hearing loss, blindness due to corneal damage, pneumonia, seizures, or permanent motor or intellectual impairments due to brain inflammation.

There is no specific treatment for measles, so vaccination remains the best prevention tool.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that measles in Mexico reached 12,176 accumulated cases between 2025 and 2026, with preliminary data as of March 3. The report from the Special Epidemiological Surveillance System details 31,338 probable cases and 32 deaths in 32 states.

According to the latest data, the virus continues to be transmitted within the community. Federal authorities explained that the increase is due to chains of transmission in areas with low vaccination coverage. The outbreak has spread across 415 municipalities.

General situation of measles in Mexico from 2025 to 2026

Of the total reported cases, 11,261 were ruled out and 7,901 remain under investigation. No cases of rubella were reported. The national case fatality rate is around 0.26%, indicating timely medical attention for most patients.

The increase compared to the previous report confirms a sustained growth trend. Experts warn that control depends on strengthening immunization programs for children and adults without vaccination records.

Analysis by Demographics and Age

The distribution by sex is balanced:

50.3% male
49.7% female

The age groups with the most cases are 1 to 4 years, 5 to 9 years, and adults aged 25 to 29. The highest incidence occurs in children under one year old. Specialists explain that the lack of a complete vaccination schedule increases the risk of complications and hospitalization.
Geographic Distribution and Mortality

The 32 deaths are concentrated in nine states. Chihuahua leads with 21 cases, followed by Jalisco and Durango.

The rest were registered in Sonora, Michoacán, Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Chiapas, and Guerrero. The national spread reflects constant mobility and coverage gaps.
Recent Measles Data in Mexico

In Epidemiological Week 8, 538 cases were confirmed. In Week 9, more probable cases were added, increasing the cumulative total.

Jalisco and Chiapas are reporting new cases. Authorities predict the curve will continue to rise if vaccination rates don't increase...
