Dengue cases in Mexico increased in this rainy season and are beginning to put several states on alert, since until mid-August 2023 thousands of infections and some deaths have been recorded, which seem to be increasing every day.

Dengue cases increase more than 4 times in Mexico in one year
The dengue-transmitting mosquito adapted to low temperatures and higher altitudes.
Patricia Rodríguez Calva | 1:14 p.m.

In the last year, dengue cases skyrocketed because they increased more than four times, which represents a serious public health problem for Mexico, Héctor Raúl Pérez, director of the Institute of Infectious and Experimental Pathology of the University of Guadalajara, told Excelsior. (UdG).

"Until week 50 of this year, we have 27,977 cases of non-severe dengue and 22,899 of dengue with warning signs, a situation that had not been recorded before," he said.

According to the Dengue Epidemiological Panorama corresponding to week 50 of 2023, 52,443 confirmed cases have been registered with 203 deaths. In the same period of 2022, there were only 12,335 cases with 53 deaths.

Although Yucatán, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, Morelos and Guerrero accounted for 63% of the total accumulated cases, with the exception of Mexico City and Tlaxcala, the entire country reports people infected with this disease.

In addition, there are entities in the center of the country that usually did not register cases, such as Hidalgo and the State of Mexico.

Why is dengue increasing in Mexico?

Infectious disease specialist Héctor Raúl Pérez pointed out that dengue, being a tropical disease, only occurred in coastal areas and in warm climates, but in the last year, it has spread throughout the country, mainly due to the adaptability of the transmitting mosquitoes. of this infection.

He added that it is completely atypical for people to catch dengue during the winter season.

“The vectors that transmit dengue are Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus, which have changed their dynamics and their ability to survive in such a way that they can currently survive at higher altitudes above sea level and on the other hand survive even at lower temperatures. ”, he indicated.

The former General Director of the Guadalajara Civil Hospital pointed out that other factors that have influenced the change in the behavior of the disease are high temperatures, constant rains, hurricanes and the migratory phenomenon.

“This has caused the four serotypes of dengue to circulate in our country, when previously only serotypes 1 and 2 were present in the country,” he said.

A situation that has also resulted in cases of dengue fever in cities.

“Before, dengue was a disease not of cities, but of rural areas, but in places in the tropics and also in coastal places, now it has become a common disease also in cities and urbanized spaces.

“And this is something that human beings have to learn to take preventive measures against dengue, Zika and chikungunya, which are other diseases also transmitted by vectors and that could eventually occur in places where they practically did not exist before,” he said.

Due to the above, Héctor Raúl Pérez indicated that the population must prevent water from stagnating, whether in pools at home or in public places.

“We must contribute to the health authority that must fumigate and as citizens we must avoid breeding sites where mosquitoes reproduce. The vector reproduces in stagnant water that can even be in sinks, in fountains, in swimming pools and not necessarily in abandoned water receptacles,” he explained...
